I'm trying to update Firefox on my work computer (a new iMac OS X 10.6.7) when I try to copy the Firefox 4.0 install file to the applications folder, it says
The Operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items
Is anyone else getting this error message? FWIW, I get this when I am logged in as the administrator and I have changed all the permissions for the requisite folders and install files to read/write.

Yeah, Macs just work....

Sorry, couldn't resist the jab.

Hey, it's not my choice to use this Mac computer. This is my work computer and everyone in the building has to use a Mac because "we're artists, and that's what arteasts use".

I had absolutely no trouble installing the new Firefox on my my personal Win7 machine.

City machine, get the City's IT dept to make it happen. Oh, wait, they can't because they only do
Windoze..... Oy, such a conundrum.

Re: OT: has anyone successfully installed Firefox 4.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.7?

Yeah, City IT won't touch our building with a 10 foot long pole. Some in the building have been trying to get me to be the IT guy, but I keep resisting that effort.

It's weird, because I can network together pretty much any number of Windows and Linux machines and am more than comfortable working from the command line and even installing Linux from source code in command line. But I have never felt so computer stupid as I do when trying to deal with Mac OS X.

Sounds like operator error to me. . .

I just downloaded the new firefox to try it out, and it loaded up just fine. With that being said, I did NOT have a copy of it on this mac prior to downloading the new version. It seems that your issue is with the permission to rewrite or replace the old copy, not the permissions on the new version that you just downloaded. Simple solution would be to delete EVERYTHING firefox and just download 4.0 fresh. . . otherwise, check the old version to see if you have it protected from being overwritten. Being logged in as an Admin is good, but you still often need to authenticate when rewriting apps or deleting certain files.

In summary, firefox 4.0 does seem to load and run fine under 10.6.7.

What happens if you go to the Help menu and select "Check for updates"? It should install itself after a restart of Firefox, you shouldn't need to drag any files anywhere.

Firefox has been trying to auto update to 3.6.xx for several weeks now, and has not been able to do so. It just hangs when trying to download the update.

Going to Help > Check for Updates, results in a windows that says "A recommended security and stability update is available, but you do not have the system permissions required to install it. Please contact your system administrator," yadda yadda yadda.

This happens in both my user account and the admin account.

I did find this thread with the exact same problem on the Mozilla support forums, with no fix.

We've been able to install Office, Vectorworks, Lightwrite, Protools, QLab, OpenOffice, and Mac OS X update all without issue.

I've installed it.. not so successfully though. I'll randomly get a "Server Not Found" error in Firefox, while other browsers will work fine. I tried everything mentioned on their support page about common upgrading issues to no avail.

Re: OT: has anyone successfully installed Firefox 4.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.7?

Well, whatever the problem was, I deleted the old Firefox install and reinstalled the new version. Worked fine, without even asking for admin privileges. I think there must have been bug in either the install file, or the installed application.

Although I have to say, it doesn't look nearly as cool as the Windows 7 version.

Is this on a server? This error message comes up a lot on servers running Samba.

I just went through 4 upgrades of Firefox from 3.01something to 4.0 via the help menu.

Did you try moving the old copy of FF to the trash?

Re: OT: has anyone successfully installed Firefox 4.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.7?

My computer is not a server. It's my desk computer. But they are connected to an X Server. I'm not sure what it's running, I don't think it's Samba since all of our desktops are Macs, and Samba is meant to connect Windows Desktops to Linux file servers. It may be this server configuration that is causing problems though. We have some kind of remote log on set up through the server, so that it will auto back up our files whenever we logs off or shut down. But I know that I'm unable to save anything to the desktop and I had to create a special folder in the root directory of the hard drive to for Firefox to save it's downloads to, other wise they would instantly disappear and be gone forever.

This was all set up by some pimply faced Smart Car driving geek from the local Mac Store, so I have no idea what he actually did.

Did you try moving the old copy of FF to the trash?

That's exactly what I had to do.

Using it right now to reply to this post. Seems to be working just fine. Using a MBP w/Intel Core Duo. I also did not have a previous copy of Firefox on my drive and it downloaded, installed and launched with no problems.

Justice,

If you're familiar with Linux you should be familiar with file permissions. You solved the problem one way that worked, the repair permissions utility in Disk Utility migh also have done it for you automagically.

Re: OT: has anyone successfully installed Firefox 4.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.7?

The file permissions were all set to read/write for everyone. It still wouldn't install correctly. Might be a bug with Firefox, or something to do with the way our server connection is set up.

Ouch, that hurts... I've had no problem installing FF 4 on my new quad-core Macbook Pro but with 10.6.6. Justice, how's PT 9 running with 10.6.7?
