So this is my first post on this forum .
I've been reading some topics and liked it a lot . Seams to me a lot of measurement people are here .
I've been measuring for about 5 years now and wrote some of my experiences at my blog .
Some of you might have seen them on other forums but maybe some have not so .......

For your information :
I'm working with a combination of SIM3 SAT-live & SMAART 5.something . witch i all own allong with a set of 6 DPA4007 mics (matched set) .
SIM3 i like best after that SAT and smaartcome in 2nd and 3rd place .

You have 6 4007s and you can't afford the latest version of Smaart? Where do you get your money! I will trade you a v7 license for just two 4007s. :D

P.S. Timo, if you want to repost your blog here there is a blog feature that is massively underused, I'd be thrilled to see more content.

I've been thinking of switching to a mac . To buy a mac + licence Smaart7 + a multy channel soundcard & a flightcase just for the use of smaart (wich i only use in RTA mode during show-time) ?? Not at this moment . Tanxs for the blog hint tough
The smaart licence for 2 4007's coming from the netherlands doesn't mean i'm as dum as our government (with this crisis thing and so on but that's a other subject al together):lol:

Timo. You are certainly missing a lot of the key features of Smaart 7. It will do almost* everything your SIM3 will do plus a lot more. *it won't interface with Galileo and automagically mute the outputs. It also won't require lots of set up and programming time (ymmv).

The ability to have live ir, live spacial averaging of all 6 of your mics, simultaneous delay setting of all your mics, and a lot more too numerous to mention makes Smaart 7 extremely valuable. You can now set user default views with phase bottom and magnitude top (like sim) or even room, eq, result with 2 magnitude graphs up at once. Also you can set the averaging to work exactly like SIM so you'll see the trace you are used to. Well worth checking out my friend, much like your blog is.

I know of a lot of the features within smaart so .... The programming on SIM was something i had to get used to and and it takes some time but goes a lot faster compared to when i first bought it .
The real reason for me not to invest in it at this moment is that i have to buy a mac allong with the program . I've had to many issues running anything on windows sound related to try it again on a windows machine .
Most of the time these were issues driver related so the programs i've tried where not to blame . I'm using a cheap labtop now that has never been online since i bought it and runs 2 programs SAT (wich i really like and a very good price/value) and SMAART5.3 i think
Also i have to buy a multy channel sound card etc . So on the 1 side i have a very good measurement system with the switches and all that you need for it and on the otherside i'm looking at a rather heavy investment in something i allready have .
Im not saying i will not switch over ever just not at this moment .
By the way i've only hooked sim up to galileo 1 or 2 times . I'm doing measurements on whatever system i come across during production so i use the line switcher option because i'm aligning mostly non meyersound systems .

The last job i did had some for me spectacular results in the phase response and i used a apex processor 4in8out . If i would have to choose a investment it would probably be a processor like that or something simular to it maybe a XTA or lake instead of investing in SMAART . I'm waiting for permission to post on the tuning from the client so it might be there pretty soon .


(YMMV meaning ???? i'm from the netherlands so i've got no idea what it means)

The one thing that i know about my self is i tend to make mistakes regarding file-ing data and in larger set-ups witch loudspeaker i'm measuring with witch mic .
Whithin SIM3 the programming of branches takes some time and the verification of channels/mics takes some time but after that it's easier for me (i can't speak for others so...) .
So measuring speaker 4 to 6 in a 10 unit array with mics 2 and 4 out of 6 is not a problem because of the branches . If programmed right you wil not make mistakes in what loudspeaker gets measured with witch mic .
Also the recalling of data happens per branche so if i make mistakes it's because mis-interpetation not because i have the wrong data on screen . I've made my share of mistakes on smaart and sat-live so SIM3 is better for me if the budget is available if no budget it depends if i feel like SIM-ing or not and if there is enough time to do so . If i do not feel like it or no time i'll startup sat-live and smaart .....
 
In 7 branches are called measurement groups. When traces are saved all the data is there with the trace. The only issue you would havens the lack of muting. You would have to manually mute your zones. The benefit of spatial averaging and live IR are worth the trade.

And that's where i'll make mistakes . It has nothing to do with SMAART but with me . So working with sim is better for me . As i said i'll probably invest in a mac in the future but i might first invest in a real good processor .
Something like the new XTA series APEX or LAKE i do not know yet .
On the last tuning i did there was a APEX 4in-8out but i would like to see a 8in-16out . The rest of that processor allowed me to do allmost everything i wanted to do so it's a good candidate as is the XTA but the RS232/485(?) i see
as a disadvantage . I'ld rather see a standard network connection on it .

Timo,

Have you considered MediaMatrix NION DSP? You could do 8x24, 12x20, 16x16 in 2RU, with a standard Ethernet network port for configuration and programming. Inside it is 100% drag and drop. The degree of customization you can do is pretty much unlimited. I'm not sure what the price is in the Netherlands, but I'm guessing a new NION nE with three or four I/O cards should be surprisingly price competitive for what you want to do and offer unrivaled configuration possibilities.

I don't mean to sound like an advertisement, but I think there are a lot of situations where the MediaMatrix NIONs could be used for advanced DSP and they are overlooked because either the people looking for a solution don't know about them or they assume they are junk because Peavey owns MediaMatrix. You may be surprised at what you can do with these things.

I am currently employed by the MediaMatrix end of Peavey Commercial Audio... so I guess I have a somewhat vested interest in recommending our products, however I don't do it unless I think it may actually benefit what you are trying to do.

I do know about the media matrix and came across it a long time ago i think (so it must have been a older version of it) . It was running in a theater here in the netherlands (and i saw a very large set-up in china but that was not conncted at all it was just standing there) when i was still touring .
The programming of such a machine will not be a problem because i've been programming on the soundwebs green and the newer version the blue's (2 i own myself) since 2003 .
The one thing i'm missing on my blue's more and more is a 2nd order ALL-PASS filter with adjustable band-with . The Galileo has them but only 4 per channel and that's enough if you're working with meyersound loudspeakers but definitly not enough for the things i'm doing .
I might take a look at the matrix unit when the time comes for buying a new processor set-up but i was rather impressed with the APEX 4in-8out .
The interface might need some work to make it faster than it all ready is but it did the job so.....
The XTA has also a lot to offer but i have not done a job on it up to now but i'ld like to play around with it specially with the elliptic filter in it and see what it does during a measurement .

When i go out shopping for a new processor i would try them all during measureing(?) and make a choice after that .

Now i need to learn english a bit better next to working with analyzers:razz: so that the abc mode on windows can be switched to off . Also a speed coarse in math and physics(?) would be nice .
Tanxs it was something creeping around in my mind for a while now and i needed to test the idea if it was going to work as well as i expected it to work .
