Looking for recommendations for a box that I can tuck behind a TV that will run a slideshow or list of messages that can be updated over ethernet/wifi (no way to get wires to this set)

it looks like there are tons out there, but I need something HD, but pretty basic feature set that is reliable.

Mac Mini. They're up on eBay used for pretty cheap.

Re: Digital Signage

a computer is the easiest but I was hoping for something a little more purpose-built with some sort of web interface for the customer and just drag and drop some photos kind of thing..
money isn't a huge issue as it would cost at least a couple grand to get a VGA signal from the nearest computer to this TV.

Re: Digital Signage

Have you considered a tablet? The connection to the wifi will be a breeze and you can find great, cheap tablets that will do the job, instead of a heavy, pricey TV.

This is a TV that is already there, and they have a media player that they have to remove an SD card, go to a computer to update, then put the SD card back.
that legwork was too much for them and they want a way to update it without getting out of their chair, and there is no way to get a wire from the chair location to the TV location :)

Re: Digital Signage

Jason,

You'd have to call the manufacturer, but there is a company that makes SD cards with wi-fi in them - Google "eye-fi" or similar. It may or may not work for your situation, but I figured I'd at least put the idea out there.

Re: Digital Signage

Check out the Raspberry PI. It has a hdmi output and a composite output.

It comes in two flavors for $25 and $35.

It has built-in ethernet but you can attach an usb-wifi for remote control.

Since it runs on linux you can use 'any' powerpoint/slideshow app that runs on linux. It also have hardware accelerated HD decoder so you can even show HD-movies...

Re: Digital Signage

I think BrightSign is quite reliable and not that costly.

+1 ... I am in the middle of an installation this week that involves 9 of the new BrightSign XD1230 units, which we added the wiFi cards to when they arrived. While they are rock solid, once you get up and running, the WiFi setup process can be a bit involved. Issues we have run into so far have been with getting the wifi communication happening with the heavy security that our iT dept. has going on with our networks. After most of the afternoon with iT, they ended up having to call over to BrightSign to get some answers.... hopefully will have this sorted by tomorrow afternoon.

This is our first time needing to use the WiFi connection on the new 1230's ... the older BrightSign models we have and the 1230's we have used in hardwired setups have been flawless. Absolutely the pro-choice if you need longevity and reliability in an installation.

Since I started this thread (over a year ago now) we've adopted the Brightsign units and have had good success with them. the price/featrues ratio and the fact that the software is free and easy to use is great.
