Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

First of all, I wanted Neutrik connecters and the standard SLMN Starline cables were not available with Neutriks in 20 or 25 foot lenghts so I had to order the MBQM Quad cables.
I'm phasing out the SLMN cables for the EWI PSMN cables:

PSMN Mic Cables

I believe the 20 and 25ft. lengths were available in the PSMN cables when we were sold out of those lengths in the SLMN cables.

They certainly seem durable but flexability in cable is important to me and it is virtually impossible to use the EWI Quads without kinking them! Way too stiff !
I use what I sell (on a weekly, and oftentimes daily basis), including EWI quad cables, and while I agree the EWI quads are stiffer than many 2 conductor cables, I under-over coil my cables and have not experienced kinking problems. Admittedly I'm on this side of the counter when I'm not behind a console (usually a monitor console)...

eh...

I recommend to use whatever cables works best for you.

Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

3 pages and 42 posts and it looks like I'm the only mic cord geek that has actually tried the WireLUX/MusiLUX cable?! I'm surprised that with all the cork sniffers around here nobody has stumbled into this product.

I've used some, although I find the instalux (thinner stuff) to be the real winner product. strips easy in one step without having to worry about foil or braid, and comes in a lot of colors so it's easy to troubleshoot a rack.
as a mic cable though I find the musilux holds kinks too easily. if you have them piled in a trunk for too long and not laying perfectly organized they'll come out looking terrible.
the jacket is also very soft and will not survive getting closed in a door or being pinched by any amount of weight. it also slices way too easy.
they're probably fine with you watching over them, but just wait till someone gives it a tug. most of the pull strength of a typical cable is in the jacket and the shield, but musilux has no strength there so it won't take much before someone is stretching the inner conductors.

I've only tried the MusiLUX and so far have not had any problems with it. It's so hot here it unkinks pretty quick but I have the same feeling that it will probably break or tear or whatever if abused.

While we're at it I'll ask anyone reading this - has anyone tried the new Nuetrik styled Switchcraft XLRs? (I kinda like 'em)

I bought a bunch of these after having lots of trouble with some cheaper cables. They work great, and I like the fact that the female connectors have rubber grommets and fit snugly in microphone jacks and don't come loose. I have used them for about 3 years now and not one failure. Great cables for the money. I got them on ebay.

Clicking on the picture on the web site works. Clicking on PSMN gets you to velcro tyes... At least right now :)

I have purchased lots of the SLMN cables in lengths from 3' to 100' including a bunch with right angle connectors. Not one failure in the years I have used them.

I've had great success with them as well. Mic and speaker cable..No failures

Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

+1 on the EWI cables. Bought a buttload of them 3 or so years ago, no troubles to report yet. Audio-Technica also good for the money. Canare is great if a bit pricey.

Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

2. Anything without a chuck-type strain relief is worthless (read: anything other than Neutrik is junk). Even the Chinese Neutrik clones have fit/finish issues and sometimes don't fit into mics properly, or the latches break.

While I agree in general with the importance of quality cables/connectors, I certainly wouldn't say anything other than neutrik is junk. I've never had an EWI connector break on me. And those GLS Neutrik knock-off connectors, on a better quality cable, make for a solid cable. I've never had issues with those either.

I've actually tried a lot of the knockoffs that are sold from China on ebay and you're right, most of them are shit. And while they look like Neutrik, not even close in quality.

But EWI and GLS connectors are two examples of cheaper connectors that come close in durability in my experience ie...used lots of them and never had a connector failure.

This thread may last longer than a CS800

So for those that have been living under the same rock I hide under the big news is - Switchcraft now has a chuck-type strain relief and so far they seem OK to me. Competition is good.

Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

I like the new Stage Tuff brand from Integrated audio solutions. It's a new cable out that is American made and has a guarantee. Pretty good prices. It is in a couple of music stores locally where I am and on Ebay but you can probably get a discount if you buy more.

Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

+1, Mark and Liz are great. I do think it's worth the extra ~$5/cable for Neutrik connectors though.

I know the neutrik male & female ends I buy are $3.50 each, so $5 to upgrade both ends to neutrik is pretty good. They might cost a bit more but they always slide in and out easily. Nothing like fighting with an end that's a really tight fit.

Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

A year old thread resurrected by a first timer? Pimping a new brand? Hmmmm....

Re: What is the best Mic Cable package for the money?

No, just a newbee learning to play bass and found this site searching questions I have had since I started playing... It's late in life, I just do it for myself but am on a budget and have found that this is a VERY expensive hobby. That and I am a female....so shoot me for replying to a year old thread...is there something newer that might be more helpful? You seem to know quite a bit! :)
