pre made multipin - XLR patch

Re: pre made multipin - XLR patch

I'm in europe.

Ideally want something rackmount, 2U, 32 xlr on one side, multipin (?) on the other.

Are you wanting 32 XLRs and a corresponding multipin on the panel? Or 32 LXR on the panel to a multipin pigtail on the rear? or a multipin on the panel to 32 XLR pigtails on the rear? I've seem panels with 32 XLR in 2RU but it doesn't leave much room for a multipin.

Panel mount XLR. Panel mount mulipin.

Sure you can get 2 or more multipin connectors on a 2u panel!

Not if you've already got 32 XLR connectors in there…besides, if you know that "you can get 2 or more multipin connectors on a 2u panel!", then what do you need our help for?

A 2U panel punched for (or with) 32 XLRs is not that unusual, and neither is a multipin connector or two on a similar panel. The main question is which make/model will you go for the interconnect (snake) inbetween the two points. Do you want to make a stagebox/snake head, with the multipin and the 32 XLRs on the same piece of gear, or do you want a 32ch. fanout for patching equipment that goes to a multipin?

When choosing mults, I recommend researching what is cross-rentable in your region…if you ever need a spare or larger amount, you'll be in good standing.

Don't know what these are worth, but they seem to be "choose your config" then put together.

Anybody had any experience with these? Anybody have comments on the ribbon cable?

I know this is my first post on this forum, but I've got to ask why the tone to this response? The OP question was did anyone know a good manufacturer; perhaps he doesn't have time to make his own, or wanted to see if there was a less expensive alternative to the whirlwind custom shop...

That said, personally I would wonder about the robustness and quality of a ribbon connector if it is going to be deployed in any kind of touring or event situation...

Because you asked for something that is impossible to make. A PANEL only has so much real estate. 32 XLR's will fit, but nothing else will be going on that panel. Plus, it will be as limp as a football bat.

You can have 32 xlr's mounted in a rack mount CHASSIS with your choice of mult on the backside. There would be plenty of room for 2 or even 3 mults if this is to be a splitter.

Point taken, but do you really think he meant for it all to fit on one 2u panel? I read it and immediately thought of a chassis or a whip...and to be clear, since we're splitting hairs, *I* didn't ask for anything. Just offering my .02 like everyone else here.

/rant over. Enjoy!

Re: pre made multipin - XLR patch

If you are intending to fit 32 XLRs on a 2U panel, don't expect it to be easy to plug or unplug them. It physically fits but it's a huge pain.

agreed. obviously i don't know the OP's needs, so he might actually need this to be 2U to fit into something he already has. But i think that sometimes we chase the 'more stuff in less rack spaces' dream a bit too far. if making it a 3U [ or even 4U] panel will make for a whole lot less busted knuckles [or leave room for future modification/expansion] i'd be inclined to go a little bigger. i'm also a fan of the mult being on the same side as the XLRs, but that might just be prejudice from learning on systems that were made that way....

James if you are in the UK try these guys they'll make you anything patch panel wise, I agree with the size of panel comments as well I've seen an Orchid split system with 3 MASS multipin outs built into a case lid of the multicore cable trunk can't remember exactly how many channels 48up by 12 down I think but it was a clever use of otherwise wasted space you don't have to use the splits if it's just a straight patch but they do have their uses
