Whats wrong with this mix?

Re: Whats wrong with this mix?

Gain doesn't change anything. The ratio of voice to everything else would be the same regardless. Singing louder will make bleed less apparent because the ratio is higher.

Jordan is actually spot on if I understand him correctly, but he's saying it differently than I would: If a performer "works the mic" there is less need for compression. Most peole think of compression as a phenomenon that reduces peaks, whereas it's actually just as correct to say that compression raises the level of background noise.

One of the vocal mic performers I have had the pleasure of working with was Sam Moore-from Sam and Dave fame.

With his band-there was no mixing involved. Just turn it up-and let them do their thing!

When he wanted to scream he would plant the mic stand and walk back and "let go". When he was singing quite-he was eating the mic. Never had to touch the levels. When he was holding the mic and got loud-he simply pulled the mic away-so the level was correct.

Same thing with the band-the horn section would stand back from their mics while "in the groove" and then step up to tag a note-then stand back.

When it was time for the guitar solo-did we turn up the level of the guitar-NO-the rest of the band back their level DOWN (WOW WHAT A CONCEPT!) so the guitar could be heard.

Truly a great bunch of MUSICIANS!!!!!!!!! that were there to perform thier music :)

Great doesn't even describe it! A new word should be created:

The Sam & Dave Show - 12. Hold On, I'm Comin' - YouTube

Re: Whats wrong with this mix?

I had the honor of working with Sam Moore while in Memphis "in the previous century." He wasn't performing much, but he was coaching a stable of young singers to greatness. Every one of them was a delight to hear and watch, and Sam's critical eye and ear kept them close to their art.

Sam is still alive and I hope he's still able to teach. We need more like him.

Sam and the band is absolutely a joy to mix. After you get your gain structure done, you just sit back and smile. True old school masters, that can run circles around most bands from the last 20 years.

Re: Whats wrong with this mix?

OK, Damnit. Now you've got me all nostalgic and searching through some of the acts that I had the pleasure to mix but didn't truly appreciate being in my twenties at the time and spending my nights choppin' wood in a blues club.

Sam, with one of the best bands ever put together. Blues Brothers Band & Sam Moore-I've been loving you - YouTube

W.C. He actually got me on stage under the pretense that something was wrong with the monitors, then hung his guitar around my neck and walked off stage! LOL I had never played without a pick before and quickly made a fool of myself!!!! W.C. Clark - Funny How Times Slips Away - YouTube

With a name like Delbert, it's got to be good! Delbert McClinton - Everytime I Roll The Dice - YouTube

I know he's chasing Cuervo's gold in heaven. RIP, Rusty.... Rusty Wier - Don't it Make You Wanna Dance (live 1990) - YouTube

Storyville. Some of the best Guitar tone I've ever heard was from these two cats, and the Double Trouble rythm section is so far in the pocket they will never come out! Storyville - Good Day For The Blues - YouTube

A Gibson hollow-body, a cord, and a Super-Reverb is all it takes. Mike Morgan and the Crawl. I Got My Eyes On You - Mike Morgan - YouTube

Four Tens Wins Again. Bugs Henderson..... Bugs Henderson & the Shuffle Kings: Straight to Hell - YouTube

Probably the most eclectic musician I know. Killer slide player, even better on harp, then He'll bust out the musical saw or ukelele or banjo. And a set of pipes to put Pavaratti to shame! Guy Forsyth.... Guy Forsyth - Don't Stand Still (Snakeboy Lament) - YouTube

I know there are dozens if not hundreds that I can't think of right now. I just wish I had the chance to go back and listen to some of these shows again. Youth truly is wasted on the young!

Re: Whats wrong with this mix?

I wouldn't call it a Smoking Gun... except in poor video editing. The editor may have tried to lead us to think that that there are more camera's by pulling from other songs and placing it.

The most interesting thing about the whole performance was the lamp shades.
