Most peole think of compression as a phenomenon that reduces peaks, whereas it's actually just as correct to say that compression raises the level of background noise.
Gain doesn't change anything. The ratio of voice to everything else would be the same regardless. Singing louder will make bleed less apparent because the ratio is higher.
