Arrayable trap boxes...

Re: Arrayable trap boxes...

2. I want the boxes to be flown on their sides, rotating the horn. Understandably this will change the interaction between drivers a bit, but this decision was due to aesthetics, and I do not have a choice there...Jon

If this is an important desire(or another way, it sounds like sound quality is pretty critical here), choosing some of the Danly products to hang sounds like the way to go. Also, you might be able to get away with not hanging pairs side by side, getting enough full range coverage from singles chosen from the Danley stable. There are also a number of models that physically set up nicely horizontally-SH96, SH46(sideways), SM96, and the SM100.

Best regards,

John

Using a single box will always be better sonically than using multiples-totally agreed.

The issue is how loud does it need to get and what is hte coverage pattern needed?

You HAVE to determine those FIRST (no matter the loudspeaker you want to use), THEN AND ONLY THEN-can you start to look at different models.

it is like buying a car-you need to determine how many seats you need-long before you start to test drive. It doesn't matter how good it drives-what kind of a deal the dealer offers-how fast it goes and so forth-if it does not meet your basic needs. I you have a wife and 4 kids-a 2 seater or compact just aint gonna do it.

Even if it is red.

Re: Arrayable trap boxes...

Sorry, that's a semantics thing. The ARCS II is a somehow improved ARCS, and has the same specs. As you say, the Focus and Wide have the symmetrical vertical pattern, so won't array well with ARCS or ARCS II.

Agreed Mac, I didn't mean to imply the models could be mixed.

Re: Arrayable trap boxes...

Hi all,

looking at a new system for a performance space here at work - I am looking initially at a Meyer UPJ-1P system, 2 flown per side with array plates, and 2 500 HP subs ground stacked on the side of the stage. What I am looking for, is any other powered trap box that is arrayable (horizontally...on it's side), and powered. I know plenty of single boxes that can be flown but in this situation we are looking for arrayable trap boxes. Anyone familiar here with ADR Audio (Bennett, can you chime in on these? Are they pricewise about the same or less from the Meyer UPJs?

Also, anyone who has used the 500HP, would one give a decent amount of punch or is at least 2 recommended, since it is a double driver sub?

Thanks!

The Turbosound TCS range is designed to do exactly what you want – they sound excellent and are available powered and unpowered.

Re: Arrayable trap boxes...

I think the second woofer is crossed over lower to avoid interactions. the change in EASE is probably just because the box is now symmetrical in a different axis

Jason

Hi guys,

In the dual cone systems, the woofer and the coax work together from the low frequency limit up to the frequency where the two cones combined would become too directive. At that frequency, the woofer is gently rolled off. So for example in a 90 x 45 DX (upright trap box) in its normal orientation, the woofer "hangs around" until the pattern of the two cones approaches 45 degrees. If you rotate the coax (presumably because it will be mounted sideways), then the woofer needs to roll off when the pattern of the two woofers approaches 90 degrees; so we set the low-pass corner to a lower frequency and adjust the coax processing to get back to a neutral combined response. Of course, it is a more subtle change in a 60 x 45 - which is what you would typically use in an array (with the coaxes rotated to 45 x 60 of course).

In cases where we provide modeling data for a rotated coax, we also provide separate processor settings that implement what I just described.

Re: Arrayable trap boxes...

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the input - I got a lot more feedback than I expected to from this post! Unfortunately I ended up working with a much much tighter budget than originally thought, so here's what we ended up with in the end:

Front and back truss for lighting over a 12x20 stage, with FOH flown from the front truss. For now the FOH stacks consist of 1 per side of JBL AM7212/64 and two JBL ASB6128 dual 18 subs under the stage. I unfortunately went with amps that were recommended by JBL, the Crown Cts2000 for the tops (seems to be enought power, but I'd like to bump it to two per side and another amp), and a Crown Cts3000 for the subs. These subs are hungry. I dont know how they thought I would be running them, but 1500 per side is def. not enough. I am looking at the Macro tech 9000i or 12000i to give them 3000-4000 per sub.

All in all, the system kicks, it just doesnt have enough to push it too hard without clipping the amps.

Plan is to upgrade the FOH to two per side, get another CTs3000 and use those for the tops, and get the macrotech for the subs (then I can do DSP in the amp itself).

Again, thanks for all the advice!

Thanks,

Jon

Clipping the sub amp is not a big deal unless you are into sustained clipping (EDM of various flavors, DJs in general, or some genres of conventional "band" music).

There is no internal processing in the Macrotechs, so I presume you meant I-Tech HD.

Yes, sorry I did mean the I-Tech HD (although I see the Macrotech 5000-12000is have an ethernet port - is this just for basic HiQNet monitoring?

We are not clipping the sub amp as of now, but I still would like to see a little more power thrown at the subs. They can take it, program was 3200 or something like that, I dont have it in front of me right now.

<edit>
their rating is 1600/3200/6400.

Thanks!
