When LARGE dinosaurs roamed the earth...

Re: When LARGE dinosaurs roamed the earth...

I used to own 2 Electro Voice 30W 30" subwoofers, and like many 30W owners the woofers were never mounted because no one had a cabinet design that worked for them aside from the Patrician cabinet from EV that built.

I've seen the pics but never ran into one in the wild. I do remember seeing several of these 27's used in a large PA inside the Bayfront Center for the first Tampa Bay Blues Fest. Acts that day included Gatemouth Brown, several locals, and a young 13 year old regional slide wiz kid Derek Trucks.

Re: When LARGE dinosaurs roamed the earth...

A friend of mine stumbled into a rare beast. There are very few of these left living out in the wild. I mentioned that about 20 years ago Ramsdell made a 27" sub. The guy standing next to it is normal sized. 8O~8-O~

I remember looking really hard at those drivers back then-I carried the brochure around with me quite a lot. But never took the plunge. My concern was replacement parts when they were needed and would they be around long enough.

At the time I thought that "bigger was better"-as did most people.

Its was a 32" or 36" from Audiobahn, This was a display at the USACi Car Audio Event. I do remember the voice coil wasn't seized....but very crunchy.

In talking with Rick about these critters he says they were pretty cool for that era but he's learned a lot about what frequencies are really needed in a sub. These things went too low. If you wanted to use them today they would probably be best suited as a sub-sub from 20ish - 40ish hz.

Those EV 30's were a strange beast too - if I remember right they were kinda low wattage and best suited for permanent installs in LARGE cabs. I would love to hear one - I bet there's still a few scattered around the USA in churches providing rumble to electronic organs.

Re: When LARGE dinosaurs roamed the earth...

After hearing subs that can cleanly play to mid-20's Hz, anything that rolls off above 40-45 or so sounds neutered.

There may be a few subs today that go down to the mid 20's but how many db down are they at that point?

I was just saying that if someone were to try to use this kind of speaker today they would be best suited to that area that's hardest to get to and leaving the punchy area from 40ish to 90ish for something else. Kinda like that EV 30 that was mentioned. The difference being that this particular dinosaur handled a lot more wattage than that EV 30. It seems that the current speaker size limit is 21" because I have not heard of anyone making anything larger that works and sounds good have you?

Driver size is more or less meaningless now days. I have heard subs that do "deep" well, both Danley and sort of Bassmaxx (B1's I believe). Haven't heard cinema-deep so can't comment on sub-20Hz. Have also heard deep that wasn't that accurate or loud (Bag End), and larger drivers that weren't very deep.

My point is that keeping SPL and accuracy, even down to near 20Hz, is good even if not common or easy.

Re: When LARGE dinosaurs roamed the earth...

...Unlike his wonderful microphones I don't think he had any role in designing that speaker.
I didn't mean to imply he did, my bad. I remember reading somewhere that he used the E/Vs with B3 organs.

If you check out Heil's website gallery, you can browse through some cool pics of the "good ol' days" of concert sound. Here's his backstory of the cabinet and 30" driver on the REP side of PSW.
