Remote Desktop Protocol for Mac

For years I have been using Window's RDP and it has been nearly perfect. I have always connected the computer via wired ethernet to the router, and the tablet via wireless ethernet to the same router. It has been nearly flawless. My big test is running smaart on RTA. If the meters move and the RTA updates in real time or darn close (constant fixed latency is OK with me if it's small enough to register button clicks) with super low or no percievable latency. This has been on a G router. Now I've moved over to Mac and I'd like to use a 1st gen iPad (assuming it will work) to do the same thing. I have tried a few VNC apps, too slow, splashtop, which is better still not as fast as Windows RDP, but has strange (different) gestures, ideally I could use the native trackpad gestures. It is not intuitive to have to memorize 2 sets of gestures to do the same work. I would like single finger tap for left click, 2 finger tap for right click, 2 finger scrolling, 3 finger select/ move, 4 finger spaces for switching desktops. The deal breaker though is the speed. I have to be able to see real time screen updates, even if the frame rate is lower (drop frames). I am willing to buy an N router, or an airport extreme to get it done if necessary.

Have you guys found anything that fits this description? I'd like to avoid buying every app in the app store just to find the one.

Hey Harry,

Splashtop is pretty fast, maybe not quite as fast as Windows RDP. I'm wondering if the limiting factor here is the 1st gen iPad you're using? See if you can test it out with something faster.

Bigger issue with Spashtop is the gestures, but I'll try out a friend's later gen ipad and see what that does.

I've found iTeleport to be the best so far as well. If you have the latest generation router, it's refresh is pretty darn good even with the Avid Venue's built in VNC. I'm on a gen 3 iPad though, so you may need a newer one with the faster processors to get maximum refresh. the 1st gen is pretty slow by today's standards and iTeleport might be more reliant on the horsepower of newer models.

Re: Remote Desktop Protocol for Mac

I was hoping to buy my wife a new one and take her first gen for this sole purpose. I'll go ahead and buy iTeleport and try it out. Does it use the same gestures? Be nice if Apple just built this in.

Looking at iTeleport....It required a gmail account. I don't want to access over the web at all, just the local network. Will it work without an internet connection, which I very rarely have on show site?

In playing with these remote apps (and spending waaay too much money on such a venture!), I think the gmail is for the "EZ" set-up of the connection.

Splashtop, iTeleport, Screens, and Pocket Cloud all have an "advanced" setup feature, which is simply setting up the connection manually, using the IP address, user name, and password of the host machine. I had good luck with Pocket Cloud until recently, when it just stopped connecting, then crashing when I attempted to connect. It's funny that I'm reading this today as I am about to try iTeleport in place of Pocket Cloud.

I'm also re-considering my choice of remote machine. Just before I read this, I was looking at the Apple website for MacBook Air machines. Ouch at the price and it woud suck to carry around a notebook with a full keyboard instead of just a slate. But I'm going to borrow a friend's Air for a couple of nights during the upcoming rodeo and see if it makes a better remote machine than the iPad. Then there this...

Another +1 for iTeleport, I've been using it only for a few months, but it has been great across our fairly large network (I use it mostly for getting in apple products, but also works great with a Vista T2).

A Gmail account is only needed for control across the internets...there is a little program you install on the computer you need access to...worked pretty slick (win and Mac) until it didn't (I assume a port was closed on the firewall)
