Club owners are nuts..... see Photo

So I typically don't post things and piss and moan and this is certainly not meant to be that ! I just thought all the guys making a living doing production work could get a good laugh at this.... and maybe a head scratching ???

Not working a show with Drowning Pool this weekend because we are $500 too high compared to a local band guy and a DJ ..... room holds about 300....we spec'ed (3) double 18 subs with (3) 15x10x2" 3way tops per side...(might be overkill for the room but they are loud ).... tons of Crest Pro9200 power with digital desks and a bunch of biamp wedges w/ drum sub...

Instead they got ( see photo) and a old Allen & Heath Gl2200 24 ch console with no outboard gear... (well they did buy a old gate unit from me today ).... but no comps, Eq's or multi FX units as of today...... and they are still looking for a snake and I quote " a couple really good but really cheap monitors for the singer... you got any " ...

So I just had to laugh and show a few people I know ... as a good friend of mine once said " they will never really know how pathetic they really are as production guys" .... they are really nice guys but totally clueless . I am curious if the band will buck and say hell no ; cause I am going to play golf Saturday (showday)and my phone will be off

In closing......... I am sorry for you in advance Drowning Pool band guys & FOH guy that you are subjected to this when there is a warehouse full of EAW & JBL boxes and various digital console 4 miles away..... you gotta love club owners !!!

Wow.

Not sure who is out with Drowning Pool now a days... I worked with Ben Berger (old TM/FOH) a couple times but I dont think he is with them anymore....

Also a 300 cap club for Drowning Pool? That surprises me as well...

Check the bar's FB page for more humor (Chaos on the Rocks). They're posting that they're setting up 'killer sound' for this show. Also a pic of someone holding a rat shack meter with the caption 'Vocals clear at 120db'. Hard to believe with the speakers that are shown. Woudn't someone from the band advance this place and find out what is happening?

Unfortunately, in pro audio it's not only about doing sound, it's also about closing the sale.

It's too bad for you guys that you have a warehouse full of EAW & JBL boxes and various digital console 4 miles away all the while the local clients choose to hire cruddy old analog PAs with no outboard.

Maybe the meter is 1' in front of "some" speaker.

I have been in those situations. Sometimes the promoters learn-sometimes not. But in either case-YOU have lost a paying gig-and the band has yet another reason not to trust local providers.

In one case I provided a quote for a loud metal band in the current 9:30 club in DC but the "promoter" did not want to pay what I knew was needed-so he got the warmup bands to pile all their gear together and thought it would to-"because they had a lot of speakers".

The band (who had already been paid in full before coming to the gig-SMART) showed up and refused to even unload until they got a proper system in the room. I had already taken another gig and all my other systems were out that night-so there was nothing I could do.

The promoter got mad at me because I would not come and "bail him out"-even though I told him it would not work ahead of time.

So somehow it is now MY fault??????

Have fun playing golf-maybe you can try to sneak in and catch the tail of the show.

Oh my my. That usually will happen only once. Unfortunately that seems to be part of some club owners learning curve. We had the same thing happen a few (quite a few) years ago where we were outbid by a guy who brought his "Killer" PA system which consisted of some type of Shure Vocalmaster or Peavey column speakers. He showed up to do a show in a 1200 seat room for a major national southern rock act. I am not kidding, this really happened. We had been doing that room with four 18" W boxes and four JBL double 12" and a 2" tops per side and eight 15" monitor wedges. We tried to tell the promoter in every way we knew how that it was going to be a disaster. In the end they crashed and burned as you would expect or maybe even worse. I was not there but I was told that it was not very pretty with death threats and such. The end result for us was that we did ALL of the remaining national shows for the rest of the time the club was still in business and the promoter never once complained about our price again in all the years since.

Yes , this is the venue ..... I did not really want to use names because my intent was not really to personally bash them ..... the sound guys are actually nice guys and I like them... I like the owner as well .....they are just clueless about professional level production. The real humor or slap in the face depending on perspedctive is that my pricing was way, way too low and they still opted for what you see in the picture . We do not really do club gigs and I did not really want to do these show ( he is having several ) but I figured I would help the guy out and make some extra money in the winter ; so I gave him some pretty good pricing and was still too high. I actually took the time to explain costs and needs for touring acts ( even in clubs) but in the end you see what he chose so he could save $500 ....but it is likely they will have to rent a snake and a split from me and probably some other odd items so probably wont save $500.

Club just does not feel obligated to do any more and complains of poor profit....reminds me of a production manager for a Grammy winning act on a three way call once told a promoter who had hired us, but was cutting gear left and right because he did not want to pay.... " F#@* that ....either you can afford to do the show or you can't.... let me know if we need to show up".

Stuff like this reminds me why we dont do club shows .......

Shoot the messenger.........

I once did the "hang out in the parking lot with a truck load of gear" thing. They came running out of the building with about 5 minutes to show time when the promised "free gear" from a band didn't materialize. I bailed them out for a pretty penny. They were happy and asked me to come back the following year.

No amount of money would have been worth working for them again.

Re: Club owners are nuts..... see Photo

It is too bad for the club....and the band. The main thing is not just equipment that you bring to the table, it is your experience as well. You know what will work and have some headroom left and you bring a successful production and no drama and stress. It is a scary thought what appears is about to happen. I predict that the system pictured will be needing a few new drivers after the show at the very least, that is if they are even all working properly now. Good luck to them!

Re: Club owners are nuts..... see Photo

If the band's PM didn't advance, they get what they deserve.

"Dear BE/PM/TM-

We've sent you 6 emails, left a dozen voice mail messages, sent 3 carrier pigeons and a foot messenger and you have not responded to our attempts to advance *your band's show*. We can therefore only presume that what we are providing for that date will be sufficient for your act. Please, no whining, complaining, bitching or otherwise playing the victim card.

See you at the gig."

After the show?!! Right after sound check starts! Having seen the act several time, I'm sure those guys will be scrambling that afternoon, if they even get the opportunity to turn the system on for the band.

Re: Club owners are nuts..... see Photo

There is a difference between ignorance and being crazy... Crazy is ignoring the lessons of past experience.

Perhaps this club owner is in the process of acquiring such experience he will then be able to use for future decision making.. :)

I remember a large Christian act I did sound for once. I had been begging for weeks for a stage plot-got nothing.

So the day of the gig I go setup-and we all waited and waited. Come to find out the band was 5 hours late leaving for the gig because they had to wait till the guitar players girlfriend got off work! DO WHAT?

When we found that out we 9church promoting it etc) decided how we wanted to setup up the stage-choir risers-piano etc.

So they finally arrive and start to unload-as the doors were opening.

The band didn't like the stage setup and made us move EVERYTHING! I got a little mad and told the sound guy that if he had sent me a stage layout we would have been ready for them. HE said he faxed it to me. I asked "WHEN?". He said-are you ready for this?-Right before they left! I told him by the time they left I was at the venue with my system setup. Sure enough the fax was sitting on the machine when I got back to the office.

So now everybody is running around like crazy and we never got a sound check because it was past time to start the show.

When the band came on-I just about walked out on stage and decked the singer. He stopped the first song in the middle and started to pray. What did he pray about? He was praying that the "sound guys" could find the wisdom to get the system to work and to figure out how to work the system. OH I GOT MAD!

Did I mention that while we were trying to wire the stage for the band-that same lead singer was pushing my guys off the stage-because he wanted to "Walk around and feel the energy in the room first". YOU DUDE- are the one that is FIVE HOURS LATE-NOT US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet we are the ones that look bad.

I don't miss those days.

Sorry to rant.

Yup. The "holier than thou" folks are about the only ones who can make a club owner look good........

Re: Club owners are nuts..... see Photo

Not to jump on the bandwagon too much (ok maybe), but the majority of my unpleasant experiences in live sound reinforcement have been providing for christian rock shows.
