Am I the only one having to sometimes click the back button three times to get back one page? Is it because of the ads reloading themselves? Not a big problem, just a minor annoyance.

Can you please tell me more about the issue? Between which pages is the problem occurring? What browser and OS are you using? I'll try to reproduce it.
Ads should not affect navigation in any way.

At work running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit using IE. It seems to happen when I've been on a sub forum page for a little bit. When I try to back out the forum home page it will sometimes take three clicks of a back button to get back to the previous page. I thought I'd notice the ad on the upper right changing with each click, but couldn't say for sure reliably, although I'll keep an eye on it now.
At home, same symptoms, running an old XP machine using Firefox. Seems like it happens less often there.
I'll try and note a few more particulars next time I see it.

When I need to click three time to go back one intended page, there are three identical pages that I can click back and forth between before getting to the previous page I'm trying to get to. Every time a page is reloaded, an ad will reload. Can you please copy/paste the exact URL this occurs on? The only possible cause I can think of would be URL rewrites which are regularly occurring. But unless you are following old (> 1 yr.) links, I can't think of any reason why a redirect would occur.
I can't reproduce it on my end using Win 7 / Latest IE. What version of IE are you using?

On this site, at the top of the page, you can always click on the "Forum" button to return to the main page of the forum and at the bottom of the page you can use the "Quick Navigation" combo box to either jump to a different sub forum or choose "Forum Home" to go back to the main forum page. In general it seems to be fairly painless on this site.

It happens to me all the time when im on the PC at work. I cant hit back at all sometimes. Ive gotten used to it and I just click Forums every time and go back to whatever forum I was in.

Try running your browser in compatibility mode for IE9. Some other vBulletin users have reported bugs with IE10.
The latest version of vBulletin will force IE10 to run in IE9 compatibility mode for the site. As soon as we're done testing the latest version, we'll roll it out on the live site. ETA within 1-2 weeks.

Site appears to be inserting the page "googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/drt/s?v=r20120211" between each page, in IE 8.0 at least (older browser at my day gig).

Yup, same again today. I did notice it wasn't happening with IE 10 at home last night, so the compatiblity mode you mentioned for that may be working.
I don't imagine too many people still use older browsers, so may not be worth expending too much effort on
