Ev zlx

Re: Ev zlx

Just something that I haven't seen any one mention yet

New for NAMM: EV ZLX

They sounded pretty good to me in the Booth... and then they told me the price and I was completely dumbfounded $399 map for the 12" and $499 for the 15

Electro-Voice*ZLX Series

Would that price be for the Passive box or Powered box?

I'm editing my own post to ask if someone at namm can look these over.
The spec sheet that can be found here, Electro-Voice ZLX-15P 15-inch Two-Way Powered , doesn't state if its a Bi Amp box or a single power amp box like these. Peavey :: PVXp™ 15

The Peavey box has a single power amp inside with a passive crossover for the split between the horn and woofer. I wonder if the EV is setup in the same manor? The EV does seem to add digital processing or voiceing as well. Not a bad box but they should state if its a single amp box or a biamped box.

The Peavey is a bi-amplified box http://assets.peavey.com/literature/manuals/118108_17923.pdf
I think a decent crossover is not much cheaper than chip amp modules these days so I am 99.9% sure the EV is bi-amped.

The EV and pretty much every other powered box with 1000 watt + ratings in this price range are really 250-350 watt RMS speakers, "not that it makes much difference".

Your right.

Sorry about that I posted the wrong link. "Like these Peavey :: PV® 115D "

Still its odd that its not spelled out. I agree that it is most likely a biamp box but they have no mention of a biamp box in any of the information I can find.

Re: Ev zlx

The price that I stated is for the powered boxes. witch is amazing to me. And I can tell you that there is a good profit margin in them as well so realistically when they come to market you will be able to get a better price if you know someone.

they were not displaying the passive boxes in the booth. At the price point I would nearly guarantee that the passive are not bi-amp, but I am sure that with a screw driver and a soldering iron you could change that if you were so inclined.

I guess I should clairify. Do the powered boxes have 2 power amps in them? One for the horn and one for the woofer or is there , as in the case of the Peavey PV powered speaker, just 1 full range amp and a passive crossover between the woofer and horn?

Thanks;

Re: Ev zlx

At those price ranges I will likely pick up a pile of them for dry rentals and smaller stuff. Ive always had really good luck with EV products. Turbosounds new Milan boxes also have the front light so it can be ON, OFF, or Limit action, and my current milan boxes are awesome.

Re: Ev zlx

Watched every video I could find. Down loaded the manual. There is not a single mention that this is a bi amped box. Most powered speakers that are Bi Amped have information as to the power to each bandpass, the advantages of having a bi amped box, etc. Its a selling point. Yet not a mention anywhere in regards to this speaker. I sent EV a email. I'll see how that goes........
I believe this is a single amp box.

Hey Evan it us up with a brief review if you end up running some of these. I was surprised during the video when they claimed these were a line under the live x series. With the dsp options and all I would have expected them to be higher priced. I am looking to move to a lighter sos speaker as I am currently using the EVsxa250. No rush though. As a thread jack how often to you all run your dry rental sos before swapping out.

Re: Ev zlx

So on the DSP, is there a setting 'flat' or one to use with a sub?
There are four settings, Live , Music, Speech, and Club. "Speech" or "Live" look like they would work OK with a sub.
It uses a single 1000 watt amp.
"The only loudspeaker in its class that matches EV- engineered drivers with a custom-built Class-D amplifier module and powerful DSP."

Re: Ev zlx

If these are any where near the sonic quality of the ELX, I think I shall delay my planned purchase of Alto TS112As in lieu of these units. My planned use was as monitor wedges and small speakers for small gigs where I do not want to haul my better stuff.

While I like and recommend the Alto sxm112a coaxial monitor wedges, if it's just a matter of a few $$$$, I'd always go with a first line manufacturer like EV if only for the dealer support network. Any decent speaker repair outfit has a relationship with EV. Alto......not so much.

I'm seeing the passive 12" version advertised at $279 on a few sites, which is basically in the range of JBL JRX, even a bit cheaper. They sure look a lot nicer than JRX, I'd be interested to hear them, they might be good for low budget situations.

At those prices, these boxes are in a different market from the K12, DSR, KW, PRX, etc crowd which are about 2x the cost (with the ELX speakers being only slightly more expensive).

I suspect that these will have that sweet HF response I am used to hearing with nearly all decent EV boxes. I am concerned with the LF output, but will be sure to give these a listen when they show up at the store.

It is really amazing what good FOH speaker setups can be had for such a great price these days.

It seems like the subs are still dominated by the PRX618S-XLF in this market though. I haven't heard anything in this price category that can hold a candle to them.

Re: Ev zlx

Well i had 2 of my 4 zlx 12p come in yesterday, and i hooked them up and played with them for a little bit and they sounded pretty good and fit in about where they should. Nothing ground breaking but they beat out the non-powered jbl JRX and community MVP II in output before they started sounding crappy, the MRX and these sat pretty evenly in a test environment. I get my measurement mic back in a few days, it is being shipped back to me from repair so when i get it i will try to upload some measurements.

Is there anything anybody is looking for from these?

Re: Ev zlx

Yes, actually:
- How do you like the sound controls on the back?
- Do they seem rugged and more road-worthy then their thin-skinned ELX siblings?
- Easy to transport and set up?
- I would love to hear your thoughts on their sound quality/quantity once you use them live.

Thanks!
