Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A

Re: Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A Question and suggestion Re ,X32

Dear Randy.
Thank you for your investment in our products, I'm sure that with the right support, you will enjoy using your Midas PR01!
As you have discovered, the PR01, although physically small, packs all of the power and features of our larger digital consoles into that lightweight frame. The good news is that we have over 60 new training videos completed, and will be posting these on our YouTube channel in the very near future.
If you need a hand in the meantime, continue to make use of our tech support in both the US and the UK at your convenience.
Feel free to PM me if there is anything else you would like to discuss.

Kind Regards,

Richard Ferriday

Brand Development Manager - Midas and Klark Teknik.

Re: Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A Question and suggestion Re ,X32

I've recently been looking at post mixing multichannel recordings and it's struck me that the available options are extraordinarily expensive. At the bottom end things are constrained by the Mackie HUI protocol being limited to 8 channels and at the top end the price of ProTools and the associated Avid control surfaces is eye watering.

The X32 could be the basis of a much cheaper solution via OSC however support in major DAWs is lacking.

Could Uli comment on if this is a market that Behringer could open up to users who don't have the pockets to spend 5 or 6 figure sums with Avid?

For example things that could be done in no particular order are:
-Supplying OSC pattern configs for the 32 for use with reaper (REAPER | Audio Production Without Limits) which as far as I can tell is the only DAW to officially support OSC currently.
-Bringing something like Using Behringer X32 as DAW controller | X32MidiOsc in house although I appreciate this may be impossible due to the agreements around Mackie HUI licensing.
-Encouraging Steinberg to natively support OSC in Nuendo and Apple to support it in Logic.

Tracktion for free

Hello

In X32-discussion - message nr 5697 you wrote:

"And finally, we're offering Tracktion for free with a large range of our products. This I believe is a good thing."

On product page of iSTUDIO iS202 - Behringer: iSTUDIO iS202 - there is a picture of iStudio with an iPad and some editing program on iPad. Traction perhaps ??

Now i have iPad and have been considering iStudio - very nifty at cabin on rainy day ( I do not go fishing...)

I have X32 and Cubase - but obviously that setup is NOT something my wife would love to see me lug around to cabin and back....

So the actual question is - if I buy iStudio next month, will I get Tracktion with it ?

Thank you

Tracktion isn't for ipad (yet?).

The program being showed on the ipad is called 'musicstudio' and as far as I know it has nothing to do with Berry.

Hello

Well I was hoping, that Tracktion would come as iPad app - so i could have it both in my laptop and iPad + some other computers. After all Uli hinted there are some surprises lurking round the corner...
As many of you know, I am more at home with multitrack Studer tape recorder - but since I hope to live another 20+ years I might just as well adapt to these new lovely things. I am "retiring" after year and half - meaning I start getting paid instead paying - so hopefully I have plenty time to tweak things and maybe put down a track or two....

Not to even think about hauling Studer 980 & multitrack to the cabin for weekend.....

Re: Tracktion for free

Just a quick thumbs up for the Behringer brand. Yes, it is a budget product. No, it is not the best out there (although for some of their products it may actually be). But when I started out doing small PA jobs, first as DJ, with my own band and later for other (small) stuff at the age of 18, it made "professional" processing such as compressors and gates (remember, I was 18...) affordable. And good enough for the stuff we did. I never experienced any reliability problems and could simply not afford the more expensive stuff - the price gap was huge. So, if only for that, thank you Uli for making that possible. It caused a bunch of other manufacturers to lower their prices as well, and start offering budget products.

Today, I admittedly do not use much Behringer anymore - except for a sample rate converter, not sure of the type number right now. But I might buy the X32 just for the fun of it, from what I have read about it. Would be nice if it would support a standard audio networking protocol though.

Dear Timo Ulkuniemi,

Thank you for your question regarding Traktion and the iStudio iS202.

Traktion is currently not an iPad application, therefore it would not be shipping with the iS202.

core/dsp and linking consoles

Would an official "somebody" from Behringer please answer the question asked earlier about the possibility of the Core getting turned into a dedicated DSP, not just a mixer as is now, but a full on DSP (hopefully drag-n-drop) to handle complex system processing utilizing the AES50 stream? I believe Uli asked about that not too long after it was announced.

Also wondering if there is any thought to getting multiple mixers (X32, core, etc..) To have some functions linked (mutes, scenes, channel settings, or even linking busses together for expansion?)

Thanks for bieng accessible!

Dear Declan,

Great questions and very topical. We have indeed discussed repurposing the DSP inside the Core and Rack to be used in more traditional Install-type applications. The goal would be to offer a product range that is both configurable and scalable.

For me personally this would make for a very compelling package that also harnesses the low latency AES50 transport to offer some measure of expansion and linking. All I can say at this point is that the issue has been discussed in the greater context of future product roadmap. Obviously, more support from users could move this along. :)

Your question on linking functions across connected X32s is also interesting as it would open several applications. This one I will discuss internally and let you know the response from the engineering team.

Best regards,

Costa

Re: core/dsp and linking consoles

Thanks for the reply Costa!

I posted the same question to the general forum yesterday, with a number of interesting responses here: http://soundforums.net/junior-varsity/7122-x32-core-dream-setup.html#post55025

I know that discussing this can touch on sensitive information, but I appreciate you including the forum as part of the discussion.

Thanks,

Dear Declan,

While we always try to protect our competitive advantage, Uli has made it company policy that we all participate in forums such as this one and listen to what our users have to say. It really is fascinating how such dialog can lead to very fresh ideas. Please keep it coming.

Best,

Costa

Dear Paul,
Expanding the DAW remote control functions of X32 is definitely a question we heard occasionally (especially during the 3 major exhibitions we had this year).

Currently, X32 is emulating HUI/MCU using either the physical MIDI I/O port on the rear panel, or the USB/Firewire MIDI I/O of the X-UF Interface card. Either way, it is only one MIDI port allowing for emulation of only one MCU control surface.

If you open the Setup/remote page on the console, you will find a greyed-out entry for ‘RTP MIDI’, already. Hence, we plan implementing Ethernet-based MIDI with the major firmware update by the end of the year. Then we will be able to open multiple virtual MIDI ports for emulating multiple control surfaces. In the meantime Guido’s X32MidiOsc Tool might be a good alternative for achieving something similar.

Reaper allows using OSC messages from X32 already, and when “allow binding messages to REAPER actions and FX learn" is active, the functions can be assigned/learnt based on personal preferences. We will also look into Reaper’s Pattern Config Files, and see if we can pre-configure something. However, since we’re only a small team in RnD working on the X32 series development (and there is still a lot of work to be done…), this might take a little while. Wouldn’t it make sense for our customers creating config maps for various scenarios themselves and sharing them here?

Best regards,
Jan Duwe

Looking forward to this.

One question since this addresses the current osc-server vs. the next major update.

Will you be able to maintain compatibility with the existing osc-protocol or is there a great risk that osc between v1 and v2 will become more or less incompatible?

Re: Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A Question and suggestion Re ,X32

Hi Robert,
the new OSC server versions will only support additional features, but should maintain compatibility with the current state of protocol.

Jan

Sounds like some task ;-)

Are you able to enhance the parameters in a way so that you don't have to convert between numbers when reading some parameter and then want to write it back, i.e. scene management?

Also, any chance of getting the remote usb working anytime soon? This would help a lot when interfacing external devices like arduino, max32 and like where you don't have/want a network stack? I assume that the usb host will see it as a serial interface?

I was told earlier that the osc-meters were snapshots and not peak-value of the 50mS time frame. Will this become implemented?

Oh, while I'm at it. Please update the dm1500 usb initial handshake so that it tells the connected host that the x32 is self-powered and doesn't require any usb-power. Today the apple products doesn't recognize the x32 as such and refuses a direct connection due to exessive power requirements compared to what iThingies accepts. The current workaround is to use a powered hub, but that is a hassle to work with.

cheers,

+10

this is a real pain that there are multiple values used for the same variable .

also any idea when the next osc documentation will be released as there are any undocumented commands. (A draft would do )

thanks

Re: Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A Question and suggestion Re ,X32

What is the latest info on the shipping status of the P-16M's?

We are preparing to spend serious $ to set up an X-32, 2 S-16, P-16D's and 8-10 P-16M's, but our supplier can't find any P-16M's!

He has at least 80 on back order, with the most optimistic time being late JUNE!

We've called all online and retail shops and they all tell the same sad story!

What's driving the scarcity of these units? Are you batching P-16M's with some other unit? Are there shipping delays?

We really don't want to downgrade to MyMix, or spend the $'s for Aviom, but we may have no choice!

Is there someone who can at least let us know what's going on?

Thanks...

Re: Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A Question and suggestion Re ,X32

Dear Gayle,

thank you for your comment.

There is a simple reason for the lack of product which is demand. While we anticpiated and planned for large production numbers for the X32 and its family products such as the P16, the overwhelming sell-through has caught our distributors and us by surprise.

We have since ramped up production multiple times and our manufacturing team is working around the clock to meet demand.

There are large shipments on the way to our US partners and you might want to check with Starin Distribution, Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, AMS and Amazon etc. about their next shipments.

Thanks for your patience.

Warm regards

Uli
