"Best" wedge(monitor)

Alright, I'm not really looking for the "best" wedge out there. But, I figured more people would click on the thread and argue with each other if I had a super exciting title like that. There's a reason this is in the JV board, and not upstairs.

I'm in the market for "new" wedges for my little Sound Co at home. Believe it or not- I have no idea what's great out there, because, well, I don't hardly ever use wedges, and the ones I like cost too much. My Yamaha CM12v's have served me great, but as I climb the ever growing ladder, I need something a little(or lot) better for those pesky riders.

My requirements are as follows:

-Compact(ish)
-Loud
-Light(ish)
-Can run in mirrored pairs (very important)
-Around $1k or less (used is very much so an option)
-Passive (bi-ampable)
-12" + a nice beefy horn
-Rider friendly(ish)

Powered wedges are not an option, please do not suggest them. I have plenty of amp power and processing available.

The first wedge that pops in to my head is the JBL SRX712m... Used price seems to be coming down, and they meet most(all?) of my needs. But, what else is out there?

Thanks!
Evan

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

The microwedges, both Radian and Eaw, are rider friendly and loud. Hard to find used but they are out there. The mirrored pair thing knocks out most of the other wedges I have been using except the ones with the horn on top like the EAW SM159Z which are not bi-ampable unless you modify them and also are really more of a MI grade cabinet. Just a suggestion for the suggestion box.

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

+1 eaw micro wedge
it will work 10+years
there r better/louder wedges but none more durable
worth the biger investment if u go new

or the typical used list ev wx , vrx915 ,d+b max

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

For most of the shows I do I prefer the 712M to the MW12. Especially when you are the one moving them around.
D&B Max 12 would be on my list, but they are hard to find used.
It's a 10 not a 12, but the Nexo PS10 is a great box that suits your needs.

I can sell you some of the BMS wedges. Check your PM.

Best regards,

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

I would +1 the SRX712m, they are so popular they have been un-discontinued so they will continue to be available new, as well as used. The new price is now more than they were before they whole SRX series was discontinued, but still a competitive price.

Light, loud, mirrored pairable, biampable, pole-mountable, and very clean and compact with the orange JBL logo removed.

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

Evan,

Reading about you specified 'must haves', I have no choice but to advise you to DIY.

A : Pick a coax driver, I'm sure you know how, which will give you all the specs you need.
B : Custom tailor the box. Make it fit your needs.
C : Rider friendliness ... Well, cash up the Kirkendall cheque ... Your name on it may make a difference ... After all, you said friendly(ISH) after all
D : based on your recent posts you are a good DIY-er with analyzing capabilities
E : You have my blessing ;)

How's that ?

P.s.: I hope the day comes when we'll be able to have a proper beer, not 'just' a dinner ;)

Respectfully

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

If the EAW Microwedges are out of your price range, and I suspect they are, take a look at the Radian Apex which is the older MW with some improvements and are about 45% less cost. A while back someone did a comparison of the current EAW MW12 and the Radian Apex using the UX8800 processor with the MW presets. The sound was nearly the same.

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

I would listen to what Ales said, or get the Halliburton box. It uses the BMS coax we use in out Bold Audio wedges but unfortunately not available in your part of the world yet. Try to make a way to hear them. Way above any of those boxes you mentioned there.

Where? Could you please elaborate on that subject? I'd like to pick up another pair of them, but they seem to be hard to find. What do you mean by "un-discontinued"?

Re: "Best" wedge(monitor)

Did you get the part where he said "rider friendly(ish). There is nothing less rider friendly than home made speakers, no matter how good they mignt be.

That is completely true for maybe 99% of the time but MONITORS built and RECOMMENDED by a national soundman known for telling it like it is and bashing anything that does not make the cut would most likely be in that 1%. I trust that if they weren't good enough he would have blown them up himself long before they ever made it to a rider issue.
