Ok so I have an install with 8ft ceilings and a stage thats 12in tall. The system is going to be for a small band /playback/VIP area/whatever they want (the first group playing is going to be a 3 piece acoustic guitar, bass, and cajon/other percussion) in the basement of a club. The owner wants something installed so it cant be taken down/stolen very easy. Its a historical building so we cannot mount from the walls and must be passive.

I'm thinking a LR system with a sub mounted in the center. For a sub i think i'm going to go with the Danley th-28 but i'm having a very hard time finding a decent high mid cab. The only thing i have come up with is the Renkus TRX 82. I have used them before and they were just ok, i dont feel like there is any way they can have the right sensitivity spec's and they dont get very loud overall. (but those and the 62h are my choice for most under balcony)

The whole room is 30ft wide by 40ft long with an 8ft bar and 5ft stage, shortening the listening area to approx 30 wide by 27 long and its brick on all 4 walls.

Any suggestions would be great, I can spend up to $2500 a cab. (not including amps and processing)

Everything is an option, however I would think you would have way more time arrival issues than normal having playback and live.
Am I wrong?

Check out Fulcrum DX896's, sideways, horns rotated. Surprisingly good output and quality for the size and price. Powersoft DSP amp, if mono mains on one channel, sub(s) other.

Ben, you are not wrong. Ceiling mounted distributed 70v speakers in this small room would be a very poor solution for live sound. Have the sound originate from the direction of the performers.

If you're going Danley for the subs, and without knowing your goals in terms of output, have you considered the SHMicro or even SHMini?

I've used the TRX82 a number of times and other similar options might include the EAW UB82e, the Tannoy VX8.2, the JBL AC28, the Community i2W8/V2-28/CPL27 and the Fulcrum DX896 that Caleb noted.

The only thing about the danley's are the rated output, I guess the difference is that they are probably actual output specs not just a marketing thing.

When you have used the TRX 82 have you been pleased? I've been apart of 2 installs with them that were not under balcony and i was not pleased either time.

I like the look of the Fulcrums, have never heard them. I had thought of the Community's but have a little larger budget and would like to take a step up in quality, but still may be a good option.

I had someone i respect suggest DAS stuff too. Artec 526 | D.A.S. Audio
Someone on here suggested Bold audio but never got any more information from them. Anyone else know anything about either of these?

I will have to look more into the others, it seems like i have some more options than i thought.

If we are able to handle decent levels say 100db peaks 10ft back i would be happy.

Given the stated budget, I would second this recommendation. I've used the DX896 in similar situations and the results were excellent.

Another option to consider might be something from EAW, perhaps the MK series along with the appropriate processing.

Re: small speakers for Install with 8 ft ceilings

Would they be willing to redo the stage to allow a flat sub to live under it?

I've heard these and they perform really well and best of all - it's like they're not even there.

Ramsdell has been supplying the install world with low profile stuff for quite a while - here's a section of tops in that category...

Toss in a couple of Crown Xti's with the proper presets and it would be a good

Re: small speakers for Install with 8 ft ceilings

No cannot go under stage its made out of red bricks from the original construction in the late 1800s, and the venue opens in 4 weeks.

As is often the case - there are things that can't be changed. I see a lot of small clubs that could use these subs if only they would consult an install person before they build the stage. It seems that they always make something too small and poorly braced and noisy before they ever think about a house sound system. Then some band person comes along and unloads a bunch of old dinosaur gear on them that they couldn't sell otherwise. I'm sure it's that way in every part of the world but Florida in particular seems to be a state that rarely provides house systems. You're in a strategic spot for people like me trying to get from Florida to somewhere else - so what type of venue will it be?

Would Electrovoice FRi-2082 be any good?

Link here

I've used them in low-ceiling situations before and they're quite effective and sound bigger than they look. I don't think any of those jobs were quite as low as 8ft though.
