Looks like the speakers they use would have a very high Xmax.
Natural "Hyper Cardiod " pattern from a 2x18" bass reflex box, good trick...

Are there restrictions to the "shoot out" , or can I show up with DSL's Matterhorn and collect $5000?

How is the "winner determined? SPL at what freq? low freq extension? output per cubic foot, sensitivity? price per SPL?

There can be all kinds of "winners" in different categories. Is there a limit to the physical size?

I'd like to see Ivan show up with 6 Matterhorns.

Of course, $5k will not cover the truck freight for six of those things both ways and a fork truck rental up there to move them around.

I'd really like to be present when six of those are fired up at once. That would be pretty stunning.

As it is, however... six of the TH-812's would be pretty out of control, too... and it would be WAY cheaper to ship those since you could fit them all in one container instead of shipping six containers.

Ivan, i asked the same question. The answer was "Just bring your subs and set your own rules". So they are very confident that they can win against pretty much everything. They say one of their subs kills 3 Adamson T21.
They seem to set their own computational and measurement rules :^).
Response 15 Hz 250Hz: at the downward slope of the graph 25 Hz is about 10 dB down from 50 Hz, and 15 Hz is 30+ dB down, the port would be useful as a fan driven with more than a few watts that low.

A 2 x 18" front load bin could measure as the chart shows if measured directly in front of the cabinet center, at around 8 inches (20 centimeters), then to the side at 8", then to the rear at 8"= approximately doubling the distance from the source each time would result in a 12 dB reduction as pictured.
Do the same at a few meters and the cabinet would measure omni other than in the HF.

142 dB peak figures OK with no power compression from 97 dB sensitivity driven with 4949 peak watts (what happens at 5000?), so two cabinets on paper do 148 dB, four cabinets, 154 dB, but hey presto- 3 units stacked per side magically produce 163 dB!

Looks like they're getting quite a bit of mileage out of their $5k spent on marketing...
 
Why do they suck? -would honestly like to know. (They do use up quite a bit of DSP resources on the boxes I've seen it available in)

People may mention poorer transient response and phase shift that looks like an x games trick, but I would say the thing I hear the most is more inconsistencies in lobing and off axis response due to driver positions.

I would figure at 10 db for every 10 fold increase in power so 10w is 107db, 100w is 117db, 1000w is 127db, 2000w is 130db, 4000w is 133 db. So by my RUDIMENTARY math it would take 10,000w to get to 137db and in the range of 35,000w to get to 142 from 97db 1w sensitivity (assuming no power compression:-)

Where am I wrong. I am sure there is a very simple formula I am missing that can make this clear to me.

Math retard here but I'm trying to learn.

So 45 db gain (142-97).

then 10log(1w:xw)=45

then log(1w:xw)=4.5

then log(x)=4.5

then x = 10^4.5

then x = 31,622

Am I way off?

or

10log (1w:4949w)=x

10log (4949)=x

10(3.69)=x

x=36.9db

so 97db1w/1m plus 36.9db gain for 4949 watts comes out to 133.9db calculated max output.

Anyway, I am a math loser and need education on something even this elementary. What am I missing?

So if you "give them" the 142dB (not sure where the extra 8dB comes from-unless it is from peak in the response well outside of the intended operating range-it would not be the first (or last) time that has been done-then you have 9dB for 3 cabinets vs 1. So you are at 151dB.

In "some" situations you can gain an extra bit of gain due to boundary loading caused by the other cabinets-but this is not going to happen with that type of cabinet and only 3. So now there is a "mysterious" extra 12 dB coming from somewhere.

So if you add the 12dB and the 8dB you get 20dB. That is only a factor of ONE HUNDRED that they are off. WOW if my car could perform as if it had 30,000 horsepower-instead of the 300 it now has I could have a lot of fun------------. NO BENNETT-you would not be allowed to drive it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Numbers do matter-and how they are determined really matters. But as long as people don't "question" then manufacturers will continue to put out whatever they think the buyers like.
