Most bathroom scales are rated for about 300 pounds. Using balancing tricks is difficult, and can be dangerous.
An alternative that works well is to get 4 bathroom scales. On each scale, cut a piece of plywood to put on the surface. Zero out the scale to compensate for this added weight. Then place one scale under each wheel of the piece of gear you are weighing. Add up the totals on each scale to get the weight. If you don't put a piece of plywood on the scale, the pressure from the small wheel surface can damage the scale, which is often just thin sheet metal. Plywood helps distribute that weight across the surface, just like the size of your feet normally would.
Cheap bathroom scales are $10-15, so it won't cost a fortune for this project.
