Advice on new set up

Re: Advice on new set up

I wanted to add that it is not necessarily room size as much as where you are in the room that will change the bass response the most. If your subs are against a wall they will be louder

As far as adding a crossover, it goes between the mixer and the speakers and is basically a high pass filter for the tops and a low pass filter for the subs. By the way you still have to tune it.

Re: Advice on new set up

Among others, I own a pair of Yorkville ES700P subs and used them with Yorkville NX550P tops for a few years. The tops had a 100 Hz HPF. No matter what I did I couldn't get the subs to sound right. I ran some RTA tests and discovered the sweepable filter on the sub was, well frankly it was junk. I added a crossover and all that mid bass yuckiness went away and those little guys sounded like real "big boy" subs.

Perhaps the 801P's are different, but I'd doub it. So, while you don't have to use a crossover with Yorkie subs, I'd highly recommend it.

Sean, you realize a 700 p is a dual10" vs a single 18"(801p) ... Apples, oranges.... They aren't even in the same league.
There's a club in town, albeit an Irish pub that has a 700 p in it.... It's nearly dead by the time we're done with it, but I use my 801p all the time for our band, all night long.... Sometimes two if need be (ef500 p on top)

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. My comment wasn't that the subs were junk, merely the filters Yorkville uses on them are (at least on the 700). I'm just saying, they'll likely sound even better with a real crossover. I'm actually familiar with the 800 series Yorkville. We've used the passive version (the 808) a few times. They have very good output and are punchy.

FWIW, honestly the 700P isn't a bad little sub. With a crossover it can sound much bigger and less boomy, albeit as the expense of total output. It won't rattle your guts or knock paint off the wall for sure though and the 801 is a much more capable beast.

Personally, I've been using a pair of RCF 705AS subs for the last 5 yrs for our main rig. Just this past week I purchased an FBT Vertus column array setup. It has a double 8" sub that's stupid small and light, but puts out like the 15 band pass RCF. I don't know how they do it.

Fixed it for you.

Your getting good advise here Jorge. I second the Yamaha DSR's (I have the 112's). Also, if you are needing portabilty the JBL PRX618S-XLF's are a very good option and weigh much less than the Yorkvilles. I'll be purchasing my subs this year, and it's between those two.

Oh yes i am... and to me honestly size and weight isnt an issue in terms of portability i need to play in big fancy ball rooms and if it does the trick without big ol cabinets then im sold haha, i want a clean new looking speakers and this fits the bill, if i do need to play in a specific large ball room that i been at before and get booked early, ill get my self a total of 4x dsr115 and 3x 801p. I need the headroom :)

If you haven't heard the LS801P's before, I think you're in for a BIG surprise. In their price-range, there's not an active sub out there that'll touch them IMO. The DSR's also crank out the SPL's. Personally, I've found the DSR's to be a little "dark" sounding, but that's an observation based on very little experience with that box.(one demo/pre-recorded music), so take that comment with a grain of salt. For your budget and application, I think Mike (Pyle) has offered an inspired recommendation. Enjoy.
