All,

I am quite disenchanted with the polyester fillers I have used in the past. I had a look into a d&b Q10 a while back and noticed that it had foam in it, rather than a more conventional dampening material. Does anyone have any ideas what this is, if it works, and how realistic it is for a DIY project?

Thanks in advance!

Max,

The foam is probably an open cell like that used for acoustical damping in studios and concert halls. It generally dampens to a much lower frequency than poly fill, and even lower than fiberglass fill.

You can purchase it from retailers like Parts Express. I recently surrounded my studio monitors with "egg crate" damping foam glued to 1/8" Luan plywood soffits, they sound better now than they have for the last 20 years.
