My understanding of some of the digital compressors is that there is some time (a few samples worth) alotted to define and reshape the waveform much more accurately than in the analog compressor processing world. More accurately may not be the correct word but in the case of a gate it doesn't clip the leading edge off as John mentioned. Also the artifacts that are added by the analog components themselves such as a VCA, are eliminated with digital.
