Spotted an ad in the Tulsa Craigslist for a sound person, anyone interested?



Need Sound Man, Salary pay



Need Sound Man, Salary pay (Sand Springs, Sapalupa)
Looking for sound man (P.A. system a plus but not totable a deal breaker ). We play out anywhere between 0 to 3 times a month, This position requires a person thats knowledgable in setting up and running a sound system. The pay is 100.00 per week if we play or not, if we don't play on the weekend you would still be required to be at the sunday afternoon rehearsal. The band is called ColdCase and we play classic rock. If this sounds good to you please email back.

So $400/month-and you provide the sound system-set it up-run it-tear it down-for an untold number of gigs.

I wonder if they pay for transportation?

I wonder what sort of gigs they play?

I guess $100 isn't that bad to hang around for rehearsal-UNLESS you have to bring your sound system for them to use during rehearsal------------------------------

I think the commute to practice would nix this.
But I was thinking it is older dudes because of the classic rock.

The only good thing I see about this is that it would be steady income. If you're just a sound guy starting out, the pay isn't that unreasonable, as long as equipment isn't required. Figure on the days that they have gigs, you're looking at an 8 hour day, and if they don't, practice can't be more than 4 hours. So that averages out to about 6 hours per week for $100, or $16.66 per hour. If you're providing the PA, well, then the pay is just ridiculous.

Attending practice every Sunday does seem like overkill if you're an experienced operator, but again, if you're just starting out, learning to work with the band would be a valuable lesson. Back when I was in high school, this might have been something I'd have jumped at the chance for.

Maybe they should just hire someone to tune their guitars. Singer has a nice voice, song is ok in a pop country style. But the tunings are all wack.

Which is why my post said if you have to provide the PA, then it's ridiculous. If someone has the ability to invest $50K in a PA, I would hope that they have enough business sense to charge enough to make that PA profitable. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

My system back then was 2 cabinets that I built. Each had 2 12" 50 watt woofers and a 4x10" horn from Radio shack. The mixer was a 4 channel with volume-bass-treble that I built out of the chassis of my first guitar amp-a Kay. and the amp was a 40 watt tube paging amp from the Korean war. The summer after HS I built a ONE HUNDRED WATT amp-that I still have somewhere in storage. I was rockin' now! Of course times were VERY different back then.

Mics were $5 "recording" mics with a 1/8" plug for going to a cassette recorder-I put 1/4" plugs on them so they would be more "professional". Mic stands were foldable music stands with some extensions taped on them.

And I was LUCKY to have that! You learn a lot when you have nothing.

My next mixer was a 6 channel with vol bass-middle-treble. Then the one I built and used for rentals for a good number of years was a TWELVE channel-with 3 way tone controls-stereo outputs effects and monitor sends (one of each).

My first real mixer was a Biamp 1621.

This is the major beef I have with kids learning on the new digital boards that feature fully parametric EQ, gates, and comps on EACH CHANNEL!!!

Could you imagine having that kind of capacity back then???

These days they ask:
"What is this for?"
"Where should I set the knobs?"

All I want to say is: Hit bypass on it. After you have learned enough without using it, you will know how to use it because you will know what you need to accomplish.

A good tool can work wonders in the hands of somebody who knows what they are doing.

In the hands of somebody who doesn't understand it-it can cause MUCH MORE damage than good. And it is better off bypassed as you say.

I've heard of worse deals.
Good luck collecting.
Sounds like a Pay in Advance situation.
Show up on Sunday, get paid for today's practice and week.
If payment is made, set up and go.
Otherwise just go.
