DJ'ing a prom?

Re: DJ'ing a prom?

LOL, I know what you mean , i used to play songs at the break for the band i was in at the time , and people would come up and ask for certain songs and then after i played them came up and asked for them again and i said , I just p[layed that one. and their reply is well i was outside and didnt hear it. and my thought was well sorry. It will get on your nerves really quick.

My solution is usually to play whatever matches the bands style and make it a thematic thing. Forget the audience; they all disagree anyway.

Re: DJ'ing a prom?

Hey guys i dont know if i am in the right forum for this question or not but here goes anyway. I have been contacted to do a prom and I dont have the music for it , mainly because i haven't ever done one before but am willing to learn all i can before i get the call back and talk with the people over it. My question is this , what type of songs are the kids listening to ? i know its mainly rap but what artist are the ones that will get them out on the floor and stay there, i want to keep them on the floor as much as i can. so what songs and artist are they into these days. If you have a list it will be greatly appreciated and if they have a clean version of the song will be a plus as well.

Hire a 16 year old dj who knows the difference between Chris Brown and Chris Lake but dosn't know what a 'Kris Kross' is.

Re: DJ'ing a prom?

The other night this dude comes up while the band was on stage and says I really should play Chris brown. Dude I have a band to worry about. We get to the break, there in the middle of my list are a couple of Chris brown songs so I play them. The same dude comes up to tell me his girlfriend really wants Chris brown. Dude I just played two of them.

She was probably wanting to hear "Show Me", which is listed as a Kid Ink track but the main focus of the song is the prominent Chris Brown hook. As a club DJ for young adults, it's been my most requested hip-hop track by women recently.

This is actually a good example of why a DJ who knows what he's doing should be hired for this high school prom of the OP. You can't just fake your way through this stuff.

So OK here's what would trip me up if I were to try DJing high schools. As a popular modern hip-hop track this one is relatively clean (amazingly) but there are a few bitches and badasses in there. Are they passable? As a club DJ I wouldn't know.

Re: DJ'ing a prom?

I usually have the prom committee submit a Request List 2 weeks in advance. This gives me ample time to find the clean versions of what they want. They tend to get ridiculous in the number of songs that they request, so much, that i could run the entire 4 hour gig on just their request list. After several gigs you will start seeing trends. Figuring out the new stuff is whats hard...its never any of the crap that they play on the radio.

Re: DJ'ing a prom?

All is well with everything , they picked some other company , this is one gig that i can honestly say that i am so glad they did. LOL

Re: DJ'ing a prom?

There's more to good DJ'ing than having a bunch of songs, even if they are the right ones. That's why some of these guys make thousands in a night.
