dolby lake freezing?

So, I stumbled on what could quite possibly be the "best deal of the year." Got an 8x8 dolby lake for $500. I know, crazy. Only quirk is, the guy says it'll randomly freeze up- either on powering up, or mid show. Not really what I call ideal, but I'm thinking, what could possibly be going wrong? My first thought is a loose ribbon cable somewhere. I'm going to pop it open when it arrives next week and run it through it's paces. Anything you guys can think of that would cause it to freeze up? If I can get this thing working 100% for minimal cost, I'm going to be a VERY happy camper! :)

Re: dolby lake freezing?

Good find, I love when people just unload stuff cause they would rather not deal with it. Allows us to get some nice gear if we can fix it.

I would definitely check any internal fans and heat sinks on the unit. I think on he 4th window/circle thing you can control your actual fan speed and internal temperature, Is it possible that the fans got shut off completely through there as well?

Re: dolby lake freezing?

While it's open, try to carefully flex the circuit board and gently push on the surface mounted chips. Maybe use the erasure end of a pencil. You might consider temperature extremes, blow some cold/hot air on areas of the pcb.

Quite a good find, BTW.

Re: dolby lake freezing?

Hi Evan,

Lucky guy...

Can you PM me the serial number and the firmware version (available through the front panel portals) and I'll see what I can find out? (There were some very early ones that couldn't do Dante but we got most of them back.)

In the meantime, pull out and re-seat the IO cards and perform a factory reset via the front panel. I wouldn't try upgrading firmware yet in case it freezes mid update. There is a way to recover from this but I need to check on how to do this.

Re: dolby lake freezing?

Well, the DLP showed up today- and it works! Thanks to Michael Smithers for the help. I reseated the I/O cards & did a factory reset on the unit. Been running it for 4 hours, and did about 20 reboots with absolutely no issues. Gonna take it out on some gigs soon, and I will report back. It's looking like this truly was a killer deal! :)

Re: dolby lake freezing?

What are the main differences between the old dolby lake processor and the new LM series? Also, a buddy of mine is looking for a dolby lake processor if anyone knows.

- 1u rather than 2u
- either 2 in and 6 out (analog) or 4 in 4 out rather than any combination of 4 port i/o cards
- proper Dante support
- half the number of modules (2 contour or 4 mesa as opposed to 4 contour or 8 mesa)
- Works with lake controller v6 (DLP only works with 5.8) which runs much better on Win 7/8
- Shinier front panel display with more functionality

Re: dolby lake freezing?

DLP only does Dante @ 96 kHz (but does AES @ 44.1, 48, 88.2 & 96 kHz).

I personally haven't heard the LM series but looking at the LM44 and DLP spec sheets, the LM44 is a few dB better on both THD+N and Dynamic Range.

That said, the DLP converters cards are excellent. Yes, I'm biased. :-)

I once wired two outputs directly to a headphone socket and in quiet critical listening, the DLP compared well IMO to a Grace m903 reference headphone amp.

So I'm guessing you'd go for the new LM series? Any difference in sound quality?

Michael,

So the lake controller software 6.1 wont work with DLP LP4D12?

Re: dolby lake freezing?

Ooops sorry about that. With the LP4D12 if I wanted to reset it can I do it in the software or does it have to be done on the unit itself. Once the unit is reset how do I configure it as a 4 individual inputs and 12 individual outputs so there is no link between any?

I did mention this earlier, but none of the DLP units work with any software version greater than 5.8.

Re: dolby lake freezing?

For some reason the "Reply With Quote" isn't working on any browser... Anyway...

johnny,

There are 3 different basic configurations... 4 x crossover modules, 2 x crossover modules and 4 mesa modules, and 8 mesa modules. (The crossovers are 1 in, multi out. The mesas are 1 in 1 out.) The configuration can be changed from either the controller or the DLP front panel. Separate to the modules is an input router with fallover (e.g. Dante, AES, analog), then each module has an input mixer. It's hard to go into more details here, especially with regards digital inputs, clock sources, SRC's etc..

The manual comes with the 5.8 controller installer and is a really good read. It's long but detailed.

Best,
Michael

Re: dolby lake freezing?

Can the lp4d12 and lm26 talk to each other and pass signal between each other? Are parts and support still available for the lp4d12? Still deciding which one to go with.
