I'm not sure about Windows 8 to 10, but a workaround in the past when programs were too old, was installing/running them with "compatibility mode" active and choose the newest windows listed and then go backwards to previous windows from that if it doesn't work, it's found in the properties (right click), then open the program. But if you find out what the latest windows it was designed to run on, just choose that.
