Until the drummer brings 3 racks and 2 floors....

And then plays one of the three rack toms once, and one of the floors twice.. I've seen this more than once

what lengths are good generic lengths?

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. I had a friend set up his kit in a "generic" rock setup and cut the cables to length. Works well for 99% of drummers I come across.

I found I can do most every kit with 10 foot cables if the snake drops just below the main snare, except for the far floor tom and the overheads.

Then you use the 1,2,3 cable on Rack Toms and then singles on the Floor. Or I can use the cable for the Snare, HiHats and 1st Rack. It works out for me very well.

To many choices that are too close together. I just have 10, 25, 50, and 100. My use ratio is something like 15:8:2:1.

I don't know which is worse - a drummer who brings lots of gear and hits them only once, or a drummer who brings lots of gear and hits them all the time.

This is especially true for cymbals.

It depends on how much you're getting paid.

I had this custom made. The long fan is 5ft. Works for every kit I've come across so far. I do have to use a short mic cord when using overheads, no big deal though.
