EV Qrx212 with Dx46 FIR Processing?

Hey Folks,

Its been a while since I've posted here.

Recently I 've started to see quite a few EV Qrx212s for sale at reasonable prices which has me thinking. Has anyone done an A/B comparison between this speaker processed with a standard DSP and with the Dx46 running the EV FIR filters? There have been some comments on the FIR filters making a pretty big difference. But something more than casual listening would be nice.

I own a pair of JBL srx722s and am happy with them, but am looking to buy two more for larger shows. If going with 4 Qrx212s with a Dx46 would make a significant difference, I may go that way. Or would it just be sideways? I suspect the difference would be subtle, but may be wrong.

We switched from a DR260 to the DX46 running 212/75 over 218s. The difference is night and day. The QRX boxes come alive, I was using EV's setting for the DR260 and didn't really believe the DX46 hype.. My local dealer made me an offer I couldn't refuse to take one off his hands. The first time I used it I was running one 212 over one 218... I literally had to look up to see that my multi box setup was not accidentally stacked. I get more horsepower out of a 1 over 1 configuration then I was getting out of the 2 over 2 setup with the 260.

Hey Steve,

Was the only change replacing the DR260 with the DX46 and were you running the cabinets the same way, passive or bi-amp? If the only change was the DX46, then this would indicate the FIR tunings make a fairly significant difference.

Gents,

As a followup question, I've just gone through the DX46 owners manual and don't understand how to select the FIR settings for a particular speaker. Shouldn't the FIR settings be unique for each model of speaker? It almost seems like it's a black box - the same processing for everything, which doesn't make sense.

Either I'm missing something or this DSP doesn't work how I expected.

DR settings tend to be very conservative, how often do you hear about a system controlled by a DR getting blown up? You choose: max protection or max performance.
