Fog controller wiring

I have an older LeMaitre fogger that had a 1/4" jack for the controller. I replaced this with XLR, using only pins 2 and 3 for the signal. This works fine most of the time, but for some reason, it now is acting like it is shorted or something, when I plug in the controller, it fires full-on. This has happened in the past, but then when I try it again, it works correctly. Very unpredictable/unreliable, so it sits in my garage not being used.

Any suggestions; should I jumper pins 1 and 3 together?
