Frat house sub installation recommendations

I'm looking to buy the loudest subwoofer I can afford on my budget for my frat room next semester. The room is about 13x15 feet (around 200 sq. feet) and has a lot of vertical space. I plan to place the sub I buy in the corner of my room. I've looked into home audio, home theater audio, and pro audio but can't seem to find a product I love. I'd like the subwoofer to be powered so I can use my Denon receiver with it. My budget is around $500. I can go a little bit up if the buy is worth the money.
Note: This is a frat room, not a concert venue. I just want a solid sub that delivers cheat thumping low end. I'm not that into the specifics, just want a good buy.

Thanks, Jackson

Re: Frat house sub installation recommendations

I was in Edmond last year for a funeral and spent a few days driving around all the dirt roads outside the city shooting photos. I loved the area in the Spring, not sure I'd want to live there year round ;-) If you're on a budget and have access to the university woodshop, you might get more bang (or boom) for your buck following a DIY sub plan.

Re: Frat house sub installation recommendations

My college room had 2x ADRaudio U61, over Ales' dual 10" sub (ATA 2110?). XTA processed. Sounded great on the couch, and was nice having a concert PA in a living room, but the horn's coverage pattern was too narrow for much more.

Those moved on to J Dermer, and now my non-college living room has 2x PreSonus Sceptre S8 monitors, without a sub. Those are plenty to keep me happy.

For your budget, I think your best bet is finding a used set of KRK Rokits.

As someone about to go to college next year, I've been thinking through some of this. (Just in case I need it... :p )

David has the right idea - a pair of solid two way monitors are great. However, as Tim said, it's not all low end that creates thump. I personally find it in the area right between lower midrange and true lows, but is more dependent on how the material itself was mixed.

Anyway - point is... get a beefy pair of two way monitors (like the KRK Rokit 8s) and if that's not enough low end for you, add the matching sub.

Embarrassing as it is, I personally use a recycled Samsung Home Theater system that I process through GarageBand. It's not fantastic, but it's good enough to reach 95dBA+ in my bedroom and get my parents mad, all while sounding plenty fine with somewhere around 5% THD and only 3 dollars invested.

Go DIY.

My system was two single 18" hornloaded subs and two 3-way mains.
Bought some used amps and an analog crossover, sounded great at the time.

I still have it stored at my parents house.
