AOD (Acronym Overload Disorder), is a disorder that is greatly exacerbated by internet use.
It is particularly common when switching forums, or genres when reading on the internets.
In a polite society an acronym would be referenced when used the first time, and then used solo after that.
However, because of complacency, laziness, and P (People, Pukes, you Pick) who are using smaller and smaller units to
spread misinformation, acronyms are getting more and more pervasive.
"Google it" is a common refrain when bothered by a question regarding acronyms. Bah! Then it's not communication, if I have to stop and decode, just to read.
And, lots of acronyms change from topic to topic. Take SIP for example. (A quick (ha ha ha, I wrote quick to make it seem like the internets will cough up this info in ms (mili-seconds), which it does, after you get to wikipedia, and find the search bar, and then scroll through the) OMG (gosh) there are almost 40 entries for SIP! So, which one makes the most sense for the topic at hand?
A recent one that baffled me was CD. Used in the context of horns and drivers. (I threw out Compact Disc soon) but was still baffled by the context.
There are 30 references to "CD" on Wikipedia. And I remember this one coming up in 1985. "Oh, he gave you a C(ertificate) of D(eposit)? How nice. Not particularly romantic, but nice."
But back to this CD reference. It was odd, because it fit, but the timing was wrong, the cadence, the
ITS BECAUSE THEY ARE USING IT FOR Compression Drivers, NOT FOR Constant Directivity. (Neither of which show up on the 30 references to CD in Wikipedia.)
And, oh my heck, when I started hanging out at SA-CD.NET (Super Audio CD(compact disc)). The acronyms there are hip deep.
And tossed around by people who have no idea, or are to familiar with the difference betwixt FFT, PCM, DCM, BSO, BIS, MC, CTA, FLAC & ALAC, BD, LSO, DSD, etc, etc.... (Look them up) etc......
Of course YMMV, FWIW, GFY, IIRC, ATHYRIO. (And The Horse You Rode In On, is the last one.)
My favorite acronym? COTLFAC. (Casually on the lookout for a cow.)
Some acronym misconceptions. The F word does not stand for Fornication Under Carnal Knowledge. As I learned on the playground. Or any other acronym. It is a Germanic utterance, that sounds pretty much like it's current use, and is an utterance. Just like Tips is not, To Insure Proper Service, from medieval times. Because acronyms did not come into use until the middle 1800's. And then were rare until the military got into the groove in the middle of last century.
Please delete if this is a double post. I tend to not be able to keep track of my rants from forum to forum.
(Have I complained about showers here yet? Yes, good.)
