New Venue = PA tweaks?

My 80's/90' rock/pop cover band will be playing a new venue this year that is outside. We played this venue in 2007/08 before they went to the house band experiment but our PA has changed since then.



Old PA was 1 SRX715 over 2 SRX718S's per side. 715's powered by an ITech4000 and the 718s powered by an ITech6000.



Current system consists of the 715's over 1 or 2 KV2 EX2.2's. Still have both ITechs and also a XTI4000.



Concerned we won't have enough sub for this gig. Would also like to get away from SOS but a 715 on top of a 728 (1 option) would only put the horn at about 5'8'' which might be too low.



This is one of the really good venues in town.



Thoughts?

Cable boxes which can double as spacers between the subs and the tops. They'll do double duty as storage/transport for snakes and/or other cabling when not used to boost your tops up another 1.5 to 2 feet.

I'd have to rethink our cable boxes as we are using rubbermaid tubs currently.



The other bands that play the A list clubs aren't using SOS and it does look more pro. The bands that play the rooms we'd like to play that use SOS are typically not bringing enough PA for the room and end us sounding bad as they are pushing the system to hard. I believe in bringing too much PA and pulling the volume back.

So you have 1 715 per side?



Putting them on top of a sub doesn't make them sound any different.



If you're concerned about not having enough sub for the gig, then having your tops on stands will allow you to place your subs where they will be most effective.



I guess we should ask how big is the room?

The room is an outdoor venue. Open dance area and a ''covered'' bar area. I know the tops will cover (probably would be better with a pair on each side) but I'm worried the subs won't be enough. If I've got to get new subs I'd like to move away from SOS, that's all I'm saying.



I've got an ITech6000 just sitting around.



Also thinking of biamping the 715s with the Itech and XTI.

One of the first things (and cheapest things) that will give you the ''pro'' look is getting rid of the Rubbermaid tubs.......

Yes. When I had the 4 SRX718S's I used short poles to get the 715's up higher. I need to see of the 728's have pole sockets on the ends.

Bi-amping the tops will certainly help...the tops.



I don't see where you have very many choices, even if you put your 715 on a 728 isn't going to be tall enough.



To me stacking cases on top of subs to get your tops higher looks pretty ''un pro'' too. Plus it's not very safe unless you strap them down.

I think we'll do the first gig with what we've got then make adjustments. Just thought I'd see what others thought. Not stuck on JBL btw.

True. But in Ned's situation, I would rather have those tops on stands which gives him the option to put the subs where ever he can get the most out of them, ie center cluster. If that works best.

Home Depot Husky Work X folding tables.

Black sheeting to go around above tables.

Black straping to hold subs, tables and tops firmly together.



That's what a friend of mine does with his 718s and powered QSC tops. Except the black sheeting is custom sewn to fit the tables and velcro on the back for a tight fit.



I liked the tables so much, I went and bought a pair myself, for general use and possibly raising my Mackie SR1530s.

I'll agree with that. If he's worried about not enough subs, then another option becomes available:



Single subs under the tops in the stacks, then add another pair in the center. But it's all coming down to the old problem of deploying what is basically an indoor system for use outdoors. If the area is somewhat confined a la a patio or deck area with a wall or two behind the stage area, then it's easier to pull off. If it's basically open with the audience are defined by ''where ever they camp'', then it'll take a whole 'nother system.

I used to use something similar. However, I find that double-purposing saves a lot: space, time, $$$$.



Art Welter had a system which utilized cable boxes as spacers for his stacks. If it's good enough for Art it's good enough for me. That said, I use scaffolding and drape for deploying my system in similar situations. I just like the stability and safety involved as well as the ability to easily level the stacks with the screw jack feet. So does my insurance company......
