I've been here since shortly after noon West Coast time gettin' ready for tonight's Hawaiian Hukilau with Primus at the Great American Music Hall.

They're having a contest and it's a pity Bennett can't be here.

What are YOU up to?

Re: New Year's Eve Gigs

Sitting at the Birchmere with the Seldom Scene. And I am not working and feel no inclination to.

Truth be told, now that everything is set up there's not a lot for me to do for the next 7 hours or so. As the club's "head tech" I'm required to be here for NY's Eve unless I'm more gainfully employed out of town and can find a sub acceptable to management.

Ben and Lou are the only members of the current "Scene" that I know but I'm sure the current lineup will sound just fine.

I wish I could be there, Lee. Some day! A happy new year to all, thanks for making my 2011 so great, 2012 is going to be even better. Selena agrees, even if she fell asleep before the ball dropped.

Re: New Year's Eve Gigs

We had a wedding ceremony/reception at the hotel I work at. There was a bit of downtime, so I got to sneak out and grab the best seat in the area for the fireworks. Penn's Landing in Philly is a great place to work this time of the year...

(Pardon the small image size, but it's just an image still from the nearly 15-minute-long video of the show.)

Re: New Year's Eve Gigs

Hello Lee.

Always fun to share.

I was hired by a club that had a cover band on stage. Nice young men with a great attitude on stage made the whole gig a lot more bearable despite a residual cold, difficult acoustics, less-than-great PA and so many people dancing on tables I literally could not see the stage or the PA for a full 30 minutes of the set...

Luckily, I was able to convince the client to hire me and one of my own mixers as a package including mics - giving me at least a fighting chance. I ran the stereo master into a matrix on the Yamaha DM 2000 to be able do get double the EQ filters. Some funky stuff going on either in the speakers or the black box that came with them - or both. I think I had close to 20 dB reduction below 120 Hz on my mains EQs. One top speaker was stacked so weird I just disconnected it to solve the issue. Massive amounts of about 1 kHz back up on stage from the mains, first time in a long time with feedback issues from the mains at soundcheck for me. Of course they needed 5 open vocals including one for drums. Luckily I had three Optogates and a Audix OM7 for the drummer, both helped out a lot. Got through it all in one piece with both client and band happy so all is good. No photo I'm afraid, but I'm sitting here thinkling about listening to a recording I made right now.

Happy new year!

Best regards,

Kristian Johnsen

Re: New Year's Eve Gigs

It's January 1 and my po feet are tired. I walked 10,000 trips over the river and through the woods to get to the ballroom at a fancy venue for a multiple act gig. On the plus side - I got some money - got to play a few tunes and nothing broke 8)~~

Re: New Year's Eve Gigs

NYE gig in a rural Berkshire bistro/pub with a female close harmony trio, The Pink Champagne Sisters. As the venue was small, used a EV ZX1 and QSC rig. A fine night of good music and good food.

Happy New Year to you all

Joe

Re: New Year's Eve Gigs

Had a nice gig with a name brand country act in one of the local casino theatres. Band was done by 12:30, we were out by 2am. Great show, got to work with one of my fave LD, and the 450ish folks in there had a blast. Great start to what I hope will be another busy year.

Re: New Year's Eve Gigs

I hear that the "occupy times square" protest went off without a hitch and they left peaceably after the new years was properly ushered in.

PS: NYC is probably possessive over Lennon since he lived there for a while.
