PRESONUS STUDIOLIVE for live events

Re: PRESONUS STUDIOLIVE for live events

You know there are different opinions and choices to be made about all sorts of equipment, but calling opinions different than your's BULLSHIT is just plain rude!

Re: PRESONUS STUDIOLIVE for live events

No offence meant - & language was a bit on strong side - perhaps should just have said "IMO the X32 is fairly easy to navigate & learn.."etc
Did not want to upset anyone.

Re: PRESONUS STUDIOLIVE for live events

Well my X32 is still working without any trouble, and I did get managed to use more features, but they are really "different", I've seen the presonus but I've never had any to work with so I can't tell how it sounds; what I can tell us that the ui on the behringer is a very good at all, using it over with an android tablet is a breeze with mixing station (this little app is getting better and better), so I'll keep an eye on the x series, maybe you can achieve what you want with the X32 rack and use it via ios/android, or wait till the new XR18 arrives(looking forward to get one for smallest event), good luck

Re: PRESONUS STUDIOLIVE for live events

I've read it a few times in the thread, but I too would say to look at the Qu-16. I owned a StudioLive and mixed with it exclusively for 4 yrs (2009-2012) and mixed roughly 200 shows on it. I kept it, but bought a Mackie DL1608 and did a year (2013) mixing around 50 shows. I bought a Qu-16 in the Spring and have since sold both the other boards.

Mixing from the stage the 16.0.2 has midi which I use with a foot pedal for different effects on and off between songs and it works great.
I don't know why even a simple 1/4" foot switch was dropped from so many boards.

Yah, fail on the DL1608 :( . I did suggest to them that they support a bluetooth pedal but no joy so far. On a 16 channel digital mixer I expect at a minimum the feature set of a MixWiz - so far the DL1608 isn't there yet. Besides the footswitch jack it lacks an FX unit as good as the MixWiz, no post-HPF pre-dynamics pre-EQ auxes, limited aux fed sub support, no FX mute on the main page.

Re: PRESONUS STUDIOLIVE for live events

I don't get Presonus decision to drop motorized faders on their consoles. For me a digital console has to either have motorized faders, or drop physical faders altogether. Functions that require motorisation such as multiple layers and sends-on-fader are functions that have become important to me. I would choose one of the new rackmount SLs (RM16/RM32)over Presonus' traditional consoles. I would probably also choose a X32 over SL because I prefer the EQ and the FX in the X32. Plus the X32 has a 3rd-party remote-control app for android touch-screen-devices (Mixing Station) that IMHO is among the very best there is. There are IMHO also better, but possibly a little more expensive, alternatives from A&H and Soundcraft.

First, the idea that mixing from stage with a SL 16.4.2 is easier depends on how you mix from stage. I mix from stage with an iPad Mini clipped to my mic stand ..... which is way better than any physical console for a number of reasons.

Secondly, the SL series is simply behind the competition. I can't think of any plausible reason to recommend the SL over any of the following 16 XLR input mixers:

  • Behringer X32 (producer, compact, rack)
  • Allen & Heath Qu-16
  • Soundcraft Expression Si

All 3 sound better and have more features than the SL16.4.2ai.

So so quality iPhone clip shows some of my setup at a beach gig last weekend. Clip angle is from side stage and the first part it quickly pans around showing the side fill, the back of the mains, then around to the power amps with my Studio Live 24.4.2 > MacBookPro > Apple Airport Extreme > iPad. The speakers are all Ramsdell (of course) and the mains are columns with 2" + 3x12's powered with 4 Crown Xti4002's using NL8 connectors - 1 amp half per horn>12>12>12 etc. on top of 2 double 18's with everything Faital loaded. This kind about the limit of what can be done from stage while playing. For the other bands I was able to go out front with the iPad and get a mix so by the time we played on Sunday I had things pretty close. The audience and bands all seemed happy including several glowing reports from a few that felt the need to tell me how much they liked the sound (my head is too big for the tent by now!) This time I made an extra effort to be sure that the monitors were placed just so and mic choices as well as mic placement were key. There was only minimal EQ on the mains with a typical squeal around 2k pulled out on the main EQ and each vocal channel EQ leaving everything else totally flat.
