PRX725 vs PRX735

Hi guys,
I am interested in buying a new club rig and I can't quite decide between the JBL PRX725 and 735. Could you guys give me some pros and cons between the two. I have used the 625 and 635 a few years back and remember enjoying both. I would be using these with 4-718XLF.

Most folks would go with the 725s if it were pretty much straight rock because of the 15s. Personally I have never liked crossing a 15 to a horn but a lot of rock engineers like it. I have a pair of 735s over 4 718xlfs and it sounds fantastic for all genres Ive used it for so far including rock. The mid is much smoother and punchier on the 735 than the 725 to my ear. They also stay close to 90 degrees to a lower frequency than the 725s because the mid is horn loaded.

I would only recommend the 725's over the 735's for heavy metal stuff. In most general usage situations, the 735's are going to give a much more articulate vocal and mid range in general than the 725's.

The only reason that I've ever heard that d15s is "flawed" in a full range cabinet is because in order to match the dispersion from a 15" driver to the typical 90deg horn, the crossover point has to be somewhere in the 1KHz range - a very important spot for almost all instruments and vocals... And, most compression drivers tend to be pretty harsh below about 2KHz. Thats really just a bit lower than what a 12" mid can do but it can be made to sound a lot smoother than a 15" (to my ear). As you might guess, 10"s & 8"s are even better. But eventually as the drivers get smaller (even after mounting to a horn) you start to need a lot more of them in order to get enough output. It took me many years to realize that crossover points between drivers isn't so much about a flat frequency response, its more about phase coherence and matching dispersion between drivers.

Most designs are flawed in the sense that they all are compromises. The double 15 will have lobes in the vertical plane above about 250 Hz unless the bottom 15 is low-passed at this frequency and there will be lobbing around the crossover frequency to the horn as well.

I use the 535, and I'm fairly happy with it as a rock'n'roll speaker, but to me it sounds a bit muddy and unfocused compared to a two-way. One good thing with a self-powered dsp driven 3-way design is that you in effect have a three band compressor/limiter when you push it really, really hard.

I've been very impressed with the PRX line. In my experience they are the best powered speakers on the market for about a grand per cab.
Does anyone have another line they could recommend for approximately the same cost, that is comparable to the PRX.

As Steve pointed out, the DSR's are well liked (I have a pair of the DSR112's) and consider them a step up from a PRX612/712 in both sound quality and output for about the same price.

Unfortunately, I found I liked the PRX XLF subs better, so I currently use these with the DSR tops.

Another option is the QSC KW's, but to me, the sub didn't sound as good as the XLF's (the 12" tops were about the same). I really like the sound of the KW153's. I have a neighbor that has a pair of these over a pair of KW181's. If you don't mind the extra size and weight of the 3 way 15" tops, they are a notch or two above the sound of the KW122's to my ears.

They have a new line of powered speakers out that I haven't had the opportunity to hear yet. The older lines (LS801p and NX55P) are not as good IMHO as the PRX line. The LS801p is very loud, but I don't care for the boomy tone. The NX55p just doesn't have the gas like the PRX tops do.

The new Parasource speakers look very promising.
