I always find it a little bit funny when people on a forum are always telling people to search first but whenever a post is brought back from the dead the resuscitator is criticized for bring back a living corpse. In this case though the reason for the resurrection didn’t seem really appropriate....

To me, the most valid reason for not posting to a lapsed thread has to do with the notion of considering a thread to be an ongoing conversation; unlike fact checking, where having a time frame of reference is not necessarily pertinent.

Re: Search vs zombie thread resuscitaion

The criticism is mainly about answering questions that have already been asked and already answered.

But they also want ice water in hell...

A really good search engine helps, but sometimes you need to know the answer to look something up... Like how do you look up a word in a dictionary without knowing how to spell it (more or less).

How does everyone feel about the Google custom search we use?
Unfortunately, any search is only really useful to those who have an idea of what they're looking for in the first place. New posters may start threads about "common" topics, but to them, it's a new, unheard-of thing.

I think the custom search is great, and let's me use my typical Google-style searching (boolean?) to narrow down the options my input will return.

Re: Search vs zombie thread resuscitaion

Google is google so a good search engine, but if the neophyte doesn't know enough about the topic to ask the right question or use the right search terms even google can't find the answers. Advertisers go to great lengths to help search engines find them.

Some forums try to tag posts with more key words to help search engines be more productive, these remedies generally involve work effort (by somebody) so is not covered by the free-lunch information machine that is the WWW. Just like the lack of technical editing, we get what we pay for.

So i repeat they also want ice water in hell... :-(
