To be fair, it's not like Yamaha has been saying "just you guys wait, in 2012 we'll release a super-duper new flagship with all the imaginable bells and whistles". It's just that "we" have been expecting something to superceed the PM1D on our own accord.
My guess is that PM1D made them little money but LS9, M7CL and PM5 made them tons so it's probably the logical avenue to take.
I think this will put Yamaha back on the "to be considered list" for many who are also looking at other brands like Midas and Soundcraft. Also, since Yamaha just seem release new products with very little forewarning, who's to say there aren't more models coming out soon?
As much as I would have liked to see a PM2D state-of-the-art flagship it makes sense in my mind to expand on the middle model for now (which after all is where the new series takes it's name from). However, in usual Yamaha style, the numbers don't make sense... I think they should have named the new desks something like M1CL, M4CL and M9CL.
