I was mixing a norteno quartet, drum kit, bass, accordion, and Bajo sexto.

I expected the Baja sexto to be rhythmic, kind of think. Instead, I had a really buzzy overdriven piezo sound through the di they requested.

Is that the sound they are looking for?

Unfortunately, my Spanish, their English, and Google translate was not up to me getting a direct answer from the band.

The sound of the Baja Sexto should not be buzzy, it should be like a bass guitar played with a regular guitar, the lower strings doubled by an octave higher tuning.
The short scale does make the strings looser for the low tuning than a regular bass, so bad playing and/or a warped neck can easily result in buzzing strings. A piezo partially unattached could make for additional distortion. Since the Baja Sexto may often be played through a bass amp, the upper buzzing and distortion may not be heard nearly as much as through a system with response above 5000 Hz.

No amp here, straight to di. The player had a wedge in front of him with just the instrument. It was also in the vocal wedges across the front and at the drum kit.

No one in the band seemed unhappy about how it sounded.
