Im looking for some info on the new stage box's from Soundcraft. Can you daisey chain two of the 16x8 versions to make a 32x16 on stage ? Do I have to run word clock also along with a cat5 cable ? What are the advantages/disadvantages of running optical as apposed to cat5 ?

thanks

Re: Soundcraft mini Stagebox's

They cannot be daisy-chained or linked. MADI is point-to-point only, not a network like Dante is.

Of course if you have a console with multiple card slots, like the Performer, you could run a stagebox on each slot (with a MADI card installed of course).

You do not need to run word clock with the Cat5 MADI; I am not 100% sure on optical MADI though.

The cat5 MADI is a Soundcraft-only thing; it's not supported widely like the Optical or Coaxial MADI standards are.

Advantage of cat5 MADI is mainly cheap cable but the downside is ~300 foot length limit.

Advantage of optical MADI is mainly wider support (for other devices like recording cards) and longer cable runs (over 300 feet is no problem), but the cable is much more expensive.

The Soundcraft mini stageboxes are shipping early May but can be ordered now.

Re: Soundcraft mini Stagebox's

Thank you for the great reply.
I have another question though. On the Mini stagebox-32, it has 4 aes/ebu outputs. What can you do with that on a stage?

Re: Soundcraft mini Stagebox's

I saw the Allen&Heath GLD stageboxes are daisychainable up to 2 GLD-AR84 on a 2412. Did you get some documentation from soundcraft to say that it's not possible on their side? I can't find any official in-depth doc on their mini-stageboxes...
Thank you

Re: Soundcraft mini Stagebox's

Send a digital signal straight into your DSP, and avoid an extra D/A, A/D conversion in your signal chain.

Yes I know that. But my outputs won't get any DSP at this point. Say that I have 14 auxes to send (like the 14 on a SI mixer, coincidence?) and all I get is 8 analog and 8 digital. It gets somewhat pricey to buy a converter because I can't use all my auxes outputs.

To clarify on the GLD... it's possible to deploy two AR84 boxes but only if one of them is connected directly to the console.

Only one AR84 can daisy-chain from the 2412.

Re: Soundcraft mini Stagebox's

Regarding the MADI card, the literature says, "Both models (16 and 32) are supplied with the stagebox card installed, plus the corresponding card for an Si series console (Vi console MADI cards sold separately)".

That looks like it means the MADI card for an Expression is included when you buy a mini stagebox. Does anyone know if this is in fact correct?

Yes it is true.
