I started with white, but it's way too bright and looks funny, so I darkened it down to a grey color using some black ink.

I'd bet the issue is that the brightest part of a case is normally the aluminum framing. I'd venture a guess that it starts looking weird about a full stop brighter than the aluminum's diffusive brightness, maybe even less.

IOW you're probably looking for a 70% White rather than pure white, Kole.
