Suggestions for smaller SUBS???

Re: Suggestions for smaller SUBS???

JBL VRX915s. Very small in size, weighs around 60 pounds. I have never heard one myself. It is a 4ohm box.

Re: Suggestions for smaller SUBS???

Yamaha DXS12s. Half the price of K-SUB, but with amazing LF processing called XTENDED LF mode, they outperform K-SUB. Really impressive.

Re: Suggestions for smaller SUBS???

This guy builds a half price clone of the TH-Mini that looks promising:
XS-12 Chimera 12" Bass HornRamsdell Pro Audio - Products
If 75 lbs is OK with you I'd look at these too:

If I didn't already own a pair of the TH-Mini I'd definitely check these out. My monitors were made by him and I'm super happy with them :) .

If that Mackie 1400i is bridgeable it would be fine to power these. I use a bridged Behringer iNuke3000 ...

Yes the Mackie can be bridged (850W@8 Ohms).

Thanks for all of the suggestions. So far I have 19 subs on my list. It's a real mix of passive/active, quality, price etc.

Re: Suggestions for smaller SUBS???

After reading through the suggested subs and some other posts I'm thinking of going with an Active sub rather than passive for a few reasons. The Mackie 1400i doesn't have the best rep as a sub amp, an amp that WILL cut it is going to run a LOT more than I can sell the Mackie for (they go for $225-$350 here on CL) and it's one less pc of gear I need to haul.

SBA760 is 94 lbs....and lifting nearly 100lbs up and down to the tailgate doesn't thrill me at all.
LS720P is lower power than most, freq 40-150Hz
RCF ART905AS is more than double the power of the LS720P and about the same weight and freq 40-120Hz
The Yamaha DXS15 has the same bottom end as the DSR115 2-Way speaker. A local guy has a pair for $1400 but I could probably get them for $1200 and they are NEW....BUT..."used" in Yamaha's eyes so out of warranty.
PRX618-XLF freq 39-93Hz...does it roll off too soon? Price is about the same as the ART905AS

Any other Active Subs at $1k or less I should check out?

Well Brian I think you're on the right track with a single powered sub. They may not be the ultimate sub but for your scenario it would be the easiest way to go. I'm trying to downsize my everyday rig too but have the advantage of a full sized van to haul things around in. With my latest configuration we can get 4 people - complete PA of 2 single 18 subs and 2 tops 24 ch board power amps - drums - bass rig - 2 guitar amps - Leslie 142 - Hammond XK3 and luggage for 4 people and no need for a trailer!!!

Re: Suggestions for smaller SUBS???

I listened to a few more subs today. I didn't bother with the PRX618 because it was too wide and one person would have to lift it in an uncomfortable postion, unless they were a lot larger than I.

I asked the sales guy to set the ch's flat but I"m pretty sure they were NOT. I'm not familiar with the setup on the Presonus digital board but the bass sounded like they had the eq pushed. The EV ZXA1 was so-so and I doubt the SPL and power specs because it just didn't have it. The clipping LED was flashing and I didn't think it was that loud and you could hear that the woofer was working too hard. Then again the listening room at that specific GC was terrible. It was a VERY poor setup.

The Yamaha DXS12 & DXS15 were a bit muddy with the boost on when I played some "Aja" cuts and sounded terrible when I switched to Yo-Yo Ma playing the Vivaldi Cello Concerto in Bb. The notes ran together on long passages and it sounded loud but "boomy" and almost muffled rather than distinct and smooth. I won't visit that GC again to audition speakers as the room &^%*$ ! !
