Suitable "B" rig gear

Re: Suitable "B" rig gear

Sounds like he's using SAC. It would be fine for bands. Too slow to get around on for my needs, but still it's an interesting program that has improved a lot.
Yes, I believe he's using SAC

Yes, based on my experience, I agree it's fine for a dedicated band situation.

Yes, I agree, *it's way too slow to get around on for what I'd be doing too.*

*That's* been most of my resistance to go digital all along... absolutely every show I've worked or played for that involved somebody else's digital stuff, I've spent stupid amounts of time cooling my heels watching the clock tick while they booted and scrolled screens... or watching them make panic calls.

With an iLive mixrack, you can do everything you need with the mixrack, router & a laptop & iPad, no surface necessary. You'll need the laptop to access all of the necessary setup parameters/controls, but can do the mixing on either the laptop or iPad, or both simultaneously. Of the last dozen or so shows I've done, all but 2 were mixed on the iPad, (though the surface was available at sidestage...), - much better than the laptop - multitouch and easier to navigate.

The idr mixracks are available (inputs-outputs) in 16/8, 32/16, 48/24 & 64/32 configs, though they all process 64/32 internally, 8 stereo fx, plus all the goodies you need. Worth looking at.

Huge +1 Tim. I haven't found another console that can do what the iLive does, especially when you figure in all of the Dante and Ethersound capabilities with multiple mixracks and multiple surfaces.

Along the lines of the OP, I understand the desire to save the best gear for the higher quality shows. However, creating a "B" rig feels to me like "I'm intentionally creating a lesser quality system for you, because I don't feel that you're worth the better stuff". As a customer, that wouldn't sit well with me.

If the only difference between your A and B rigs is size, that's fine. I'm a firm believer in everything being the highest quality possible, whether it's my A rig or my Z rig.

In fact, if the B rig is going to be lesser quality, it might actually be worse in the long run. Typical B rig events might include more abuse than cleaner A rig events, and if the B rig gear is lower quality, it actually might hold up to the demands of the tougher gig much worse than the higher quality gear would.

Example: I recently provided production for a private party featuring Mickey Avalon. I knew this was going to be a crazy party and that rappers always want it insanely loud. I provided high quality gear, but not an insane amount of it. I was not running the show, but I have pictures and reports of the event, which includes solid clip on every piece of gear upstream of the amps, and noise complaints from 5 miles away. Additionally, with the presence of the Budweiser trailer and seemingly endless beer, everything was covered with beer mud. Yes, mud, not made with water, but with beer.

Had the gear been any less quality with any worse limiters, the whole rig would be in the recone shop right now. But due to the quality, even at an abusive gig, it all survived fine and just needed a little cleaning.

I hope my ramblings have made some sense

Re: Suitable "B" rig gear

A "B" rig is the highest quality possible with the budget the customer has to work with. I am not sending out an iLive for a $200 bar gig. A "B" rig needs to be durable first and primary because as the event budget decreases, the risk to the gear increases. The selling point of the iLive to me is the mix and match capability of the mixrack and the surface. It also cuts the training costs for employees because all gear is similar. Having a stable of various surfaces and mixracks makes a lot of sense.

As an aside, the band I work for primarily has been moving up the food chain. At a recent festival I got my first opportunity to drive an iLive T112 (having only run digital 01v96 and an LS9 before this.) After about 5 minutes of walkthrough from the A1 I was on my way and had an easy day. Wish I could buy into a lower version of that at a level I could afford. (Actually starting to think about it based on my experience with it.)

Re: Suitable "B" rig gear

For a general beat around dry rental box, I haven't found much better for the price than the qsc K series, the KW being even better. I have had unto 16 boxes at once and I was able to keep them either on B rig, or dry rental duty and out of the shop most of the time. They are durable, relatively cheap, hard to blow up, have essentially a built in mixer on the back and you can put 5 of them on a 15 amp circuit.
While there are better sounding boxes, i wouldn't be as confident sending them out into the world as I would with some others.

Re: Suitable "B" rig gear

A b rig to me should be
inexpensive to repair (recones are not going to kill you)
Robust and loud ( nothing fancy just proven equipemt - late model electronics that are not to long in the tooth, older cabs)
Be able to price in the market you want
Sometimes thats peavey amps, and speakers, sometimes its old eaw and turbo boxes, or even a nice proprietary system.
Before you ask whats a b- rig ask what is a client want to spend for a b rig- If its $200 - Some late modedl peavey is the answer
if its $500 a day festivals it might still be the answer- to me its what ever doesnt suck I can score a deal on
