The surface-less console evolution

Re: The surface-less console evolution

I use an iPad for some shows, but even on a digital control surface it is difficult to do all I can on an analog console. I am often riding 4 sources at once, if I can. On the iPad I can setup appropriate DCA faders on the screen but as soon as I have to switch screens it is menu city again. Hard to ride the mid sweep on the guitar while riding lead vocal channel and also adjusting vocal fx send...you get the picture. Not what i prefer. If we get virtual control in the air like in movies that would be awesome.
Basically, if a remote app could be 100% configurable..yeah... I could see that.

On the X32, you can actually have multiple iPads, which would allow you access to multiple parameters at the same time, if need be.

My DL1608 generally lives in Monitor World with an iPad docked and another for wireless mixing from FOH so theoretically I could have an ME if the act so desires - I think that is quite cool as do some of the acts I occasionally do who have experienced "real" production 8)~8-)~.

That was one of the features I had hoped for and had gotten used to with the SAC system. It is very handy for personal monitor systems as well as a FOH and separate monitor mixer. You can also take a post fade mix off of FOH for things like a tweakable board feed for video and things like if there is someone with some chops to run it by having another iPad and a set of headphones available. Very useable.

Re: The surface-less console evolution

The jump from anolog to digital for lighting controls didn't make physical faders go away. Why would the audio sector do that?

I started out in lighting with huge pre-DMX consoles with many long rows of faders, subgroups and pin matrices and have now progressed to happily running Martin lightjockey on a PC.
So at least for me physical faders are a thing of the past :-)

Saw this product on musicians friend and was thinking something along these lines would be where things are headed (This one is for DAW's of course and probably not as customizeable as it could be, but the concept intrigued me)

The Raven is designed TO give you faders. The studio world in many cases is intent on moving back to faders and real time mixing.
I am in the middle of all this and fast setup, full recall and most importantly, less steps are most important to me. Multiple layers of saves and more files to store and backup are not a big appeal to me. I am going to implement iPad control to my setup to aid in digital mastering work and mixing. I hate sitting in one spot for very long!
Also, like most of these situations are totally convenience driven. Never saw one person who got a fancy new digital console mix any better than before...
