Two drummers

Re: Two drummers

Great stuff. It looks like the same tour that was used for the "Seconds Out" live album, but this wasn't included. Perhaps released outside the USA?

The Collins/Thompson duet in "Dance On a Volcano" from that album represents some fine drumming, IMHO.

Some of the comments on the YouTube post that mention Collins as a inspiration to play & teach ring true. Genesis was one of my sonic inspirations, and one of my musical inspirations as well. It's a shame there can't be a reunion.

Thanks for the link, Brian.

I had to go dig through my CD shelves to find it, but this is also on the "Live: The Way We Walk Volume Two: The Longs" disc, which seems like it was tracked on the "We Can't Dance" tour. Interestingly enough, "Dance on a Volcano" is part of a medley track on the same disc, although without the duet.

I think it's out of print, but I remember buying both Vol 1 and Vol 2, so it was released here in the states at some point in the early 90's.

Phil and his work both with and after Genesis were certainly some of my inspirations as well. It's a shame to see that he's retired, as well as physically unable to play anymore.

Re: Two drummers

One of my all-time favorites. I believe this ended up on an album somewhere.

From what I can tell - PC - right channel, CT - left channel.

Beat me to it with Phil & Chester - here's another clip with better audio - different duet, but still very good. They do some unison on the ends of songs, but they've also been playing together a long, long time.

Having been a fan of them since the mid-80's, I do find the songs a bit odd now that they've dropped down 2-3 whole steps - makes them a bit sludgier. I remember wearing out my cassette of 3 sides Live as well as the double LP of Seconds Out. "Afterglow" on that album was another one with great double drumming.

Re: Two drummers

Thanks for the Youtube links.
It sounds on the Genesis one that there is only one kick drum in the centre, and on the Godsmack one both kits are panned hard left and hard right, including the kick drums.

I tried the snares and hats panned hard last night for a couple of tunes and it worked well.
I see a bunch of sub-scene writing in my future.

Incidentally, the cymbal splash towards the end of the Genesis is a good example of how hideously evil MP3 encoders are.

Thanks again for your help.

Onwards.

Andy.

Here's a live clip from Genesis in 1976, Trick of the Tail Tour
Bill Bruford drummed on that tour. (Chester joined afterwards)

Not the best audio, but still a wonderful clip.
at 2:47, Bill and Phil get down to business.

Tony Banks is his amazing self all the way thru that track as always
(That era Genesis was genius)
