I definitely do not want to return to the amps of even five years ago. The processing hasn't changed much since the advent of affordable DSP, but manufacturers have gotten so good at it I wouldn't want to go back there either.

+1, lots of real progress in several areas of audio. Don't forget modern speakers are getting better too.

Chainsaws OTOH have mainly added safety features and responded to regulations, while reducing cost.

With power amps there has been a long progression of reducing cost with technology, that simultaneously reduces copper, iron and aluminum, all good things. Chainsaws get cheaper by cutting corners.

Interesting statement, I don't agree, but,,,,,. Will see how many of these new amps are around and still working in 20 years.

So how are saws getting cheaper by cutting corners?

I am not a chain saw expert. I have nothing authoritative to offer about newer chainsaws, I was speculating.. and rationalizing my decision to rebuild my old one, vs buy new.

Apparently The people I bought the saw from are no experts either. I asked for another chain, so for the heck of I was taking the saw apart and checking it out, I put the spare chain on and its to long. I counted the dl, ( drive links), 28'' bar is suppose to be 93 dl, this spare chain is 95 dl. I guess they ran out of fingers and toes to count on when they made the chain up.

Well I finally got to run the 390 xp today. What a saw!!! Makes the consumer saws act like a play toy. Kinda like Drawmer vs behringer,. The cutting speed on the saw is insane, I was making 2.5 cuts to my buddies Stihl 039. It is a pig on fuel but I don't care. It makes me want to sell off all my smaller saws. A 372 xp with a 20'' bar may be next.

This is just the upper small branches from my cottonwood, that fell during Katrina. You can see the trunk in the in the background of the pix.

Not easy to cut up the trunk with my tiny 18" bar... But I got er done after several months of hacking away.

Eventually I just stacked the excess wood along the side of the road and people would stop and carry it away.

To bad it was a junkwood tree, if it was a hardwood you could have sold the wood off.

I lost a couple hardwood trees in my back lot that same storm but they were smaller trees < 1 1/2' diameter.

Selling wood after Katrina would be like trying to sell ice cubes to eskimos. There was more supply than demand. :-)

Little cooler up here where I live, all the wood would be put to good use fast, Fire wood, pellets,,,,,,,
