What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Or the neighbors car?

You can usually tell they guys who are in the audio business-they don't drive cars like that

As a saying goes around the shop when we see something like that.

''Well THEY aren't in the audio business''

Linn Recordings-Various Hi end test tunes my son got for me at the local Ferrari dealership (yeah-kinda odd

) but they are well produced.

Do many customers decide to buy a Lamborghini instead of a Ferrari because of car audio preference?

Anyone who turns the radio on in a Ferrari should never be in a Ferrari.

Unless you're listening to this:

Yes, that's Robin Leach doing the intro.

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Depending on the venue.....

Brooks and Dunn- Hillbilly Deluxe (serious low end!)

ACDC- Thunderstruck

Nickelback- Burn it to the Ground

If we're doing a larger country act that doesn't have an intro I will often use hillbilly deluxe. The low end hit and the beginning will just about evacuate the front row LOL.

Have any of you guys ever heard Ricochet's intro? we had them back in october....

Discomfort is not what I am using looking for when tuning a system, nor are there usually people in the front row...

I actually didn't know it was going to be that loud!!...just a sound guy having way too much fun with a bunch of VR218's....

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Thought you'd like that one. IIRC, you mentioned something a while back about using ''Passenger'' - another great drum track from them. Haven't listened to the new one too much, will have to get into it.

''Hella Good'' is a great tune. Harley from Interpol/The Strokes uses that too. Of course, he still dreams of mixing for ND, so...

But yeah... noise first, of course. Do your alignment stuff and then on with the musical tests. Same thing on my end of the snake - make sure the noise is coming out of the right boxes and then see what they sound like. Then go yell into them for a bit.

Haha... I wish it was mine... it's acutally my step-dad's. And no, he is NOT in the audio business...

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

I'm a wee bit behind the times, but I just discovered this forum, so please forgive.

1. Pink noise generated in ElectroAcoustics Toolbox to make sure my zones are all working
2. LCRS Test from the Bink Audio Test CD
3. Joss Stone - Free Me; her vocal is very percussive, so it helps me get a feel for the reflections in the room
4. John Mayer - Assassin; that usually gets me to where I'm happy

I picked up America Baby and Walking In Memphis from the guy I worked under my first three years in the field. Other than that, it's usually Africa by Toto, or something off of Thriller. I mix a lot of a cappella groups, so if I'm doing that or a corporate gig and have lots of talking, I'll pull out some Acappella or Zoe Group; I know a lot of those group members and engineers personally, so that helps.

Once the room's EQ'ed, I use the vocal off the multitrack for Heard It Through the Grapevine and Bohemian Rhapsody to tweak my reverb.

I'll throw some generic rock stuff (usually GNR) on at the end, part for my pleasure and part for tweaking. If I'm doing a pop concert, I'll throw on an MP3 of Adam Lambert or Black Eyed Peas, since that's what the kids will be used to hearing.

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Thanks for all of the great ideas. I usually play stuff I like and know but one of my favorites for tweaking is Chuck Mangione - Give It All You Got, I find it to be a good overall balance of everything.

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Earth Wind And Fire "September" I am over it, all of my crew has been over it, but it gets me there quick. It is kind of like mixing on Yamaha NS10's in the studio. Back in the day before digital processing I used to make my adjustments at the crossover with this song. It worked great and always sounded better than pink noise.

I find most music sounds better than pink noise, even Pink, Pink Floyd or Music from Big Pink......

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

It depends. I typically don't fire up This Dying Soul by Dream Theatre on the rock show with a hat gig, then again I probably won't run Good Mother by Jann Arden on any of the double kick and pointy sounding guitars shows although both songs give me a good idea on where the rig of the day is sitting.

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

My songs of choice seem to change weekly.

This week, it's Ryan Star - 11:59, Brand New Day, and Start A Fire.

I only found these songs after mixing them at a recent show.

Other songs include selections from K's Choice, Switchfoot, Santana, David Guetta, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting and the Police, and maybe even some Tower of Power. And that's just naming what pops into my head this second.
