Pink Floyd Dark side of The Moon 1983 at the Spectrum in Philly. 1st ever live rock show at the ripe old age of 12! My older bros. buddy came down with pneumonia and they didn't want to waste the ticket so I begged until he gave in and my mom said OK! After that rock and roll was never the same for me.Of course I learned that night smoking pot was a common thing at rock shows and not just in my Moms den at home! All the while my brother telling me to keep my mouth shut when we got home if I knew what was good for me! LOL The biggest thrill for me was wondering how the hell they do all that so the curiosity bug had bitten deep! By the age of 16 I was mixing my older brothers (guitar player) bands and making flash pots with coffee cans ,flash powder and rocket motor igniter's! Fortunately we never burned anything down and there was no loss of life!

Like some of the others, I got started as a kid. I was maybe about 8 years old or so and it was the late 60s. It all started for me with our "good" reel-to-reel tape recorder. By plugging in a mic and and external speaker and pushing Record, I had a portable "PA system". Then I started tearing the motors and speakers out of broken old appliances that my friends gave me. After that I got into a little harmless "circuit bending" with high voltages and vacuum tubes. Learned a lesson or two, or not. More fun than a barrel of monkeys though. Then came high school and college. Then the family. I'm really still just a kid at heart though. :)

My early infection was 'helping' my dad's band set up and strike, age 3-4. I remember the round cast base mic stands were too heavy for me to lift, mics and cables were fine.

Later on, age 11, was sound operator for school musical.

Age 20, hired as AV tech at a resort/conference center. After 2 weeks, mixed a local bluegrass band, was told my mix was better than their studio album. That's the point where audio went from hobby to obsession, and hasn't slowed down since!

I had the 'soundman' dream.

Went to sleep, stopped by in dream-land and mixed Dream Theater and Brittany Spears on the same ticket.

Woke up and thought to myself;

"damn. That was a lot of fun. I got to mix a great band AND have a good laugh".

:P

And I haven't slowed down since.


*disclaimer. I have mixed neither of the aforementioned bands. But a man can dream, right?

I really enjoyed that.

So many times the "marching band" version of rock songs is sooooooo bad. But that was well arranged and performed.

I first really became interested in this field when I was asked to run my high schools sound and lighting system for a night at the age of twelve. After that night I got into doing research on the subject and found myself asking to come to a few gigs with the local sound guy. Ever since then I have been expanding my knowledge of sound and lighting systems rapidly, and I plan to incorporate this in to my future career as an electrical engineer.

don't know the FOH guy, but i used to know their drum tech. or i know the guy who used to be their drum tech. or something like that.

of course, since i'm blanking on his name, maybe i don't actually 'know' him... :) good guy. used to work a lot of local crew here in DC between DT tours. i was playing some king's X and rush for sound check and he came up to me, handed me a boardmix cd and said 'if you like them, you might like this band i tech for'. i thought they were some little local outfit. until i put the cd on... holy freakin' crap...
