The attached is from my college days...about 10 years ago.
I used to own 2 Electro Voice 30W 30" subwoofers, and like many 30W owners the woofers were never mounted because no one had a cabinet design that worked for them aside from the Patrician cabinet from EV that built.
I remember looking really hard at those drivers back then-I carried the brochure around with me quite a lot. But never took the plunge. My concern was replacement parts when they were needed and would they be around long enough.A friend of mine stumbled into a rare beast. There are very few of these left living out in the wild. I mentioned that about 20 years ago Ramsdell made a 27" sub. The guy standing next to it is normal sized. 8O~8-O~

OK - What is it? Looks like some kind of big car woofer made for setting off car alarms while driving through parking lots.

At the time I thought that "bigger was better"-as did most people.
You mean like a normal decent sub?If you wanted to use them today they would probably be best suited as a sub-sub from 20ish - 40ish hz.

Its was a 32" or 36" from Audiobahn, This was a display at the USACi Car Audio Event. I do remember the voice coil wasn't seized....but very crunchy.

After hearing subs that can cleanly play to mid-20's Hz, anything that rolls off above 40-45 or so sounds neutered.
There may be a few subs today that go down to the mid 20's but how many db down are they at that point?
I was just saying that if someone were to try to use this kind of speaker today they would be best suited to that area that's hardest to get to and leaving the punchy area from 40ish to 90ish for something else. Kinda like that EV 30 that was mentioned. The difference being that this particular dinosaur handled a lot more wattage than that EV 30. It seems that the current speaker size limit is 21" because I have not heard of anyone making anything larger that works and sounds good have you?
Bob Heil has some experience with large drivers.
I didn't mean to imply he did, my bad. I remember reading somewhere that he used the E/Vs with B3 organs....Unlike his wonderful microphones I don't think he had any role in designing that speaker.
