Hello guys!

This is my first post here, I hope you'll help me out.

Me and my friend want to start filming some minor social experiments and we already have a camera but we need some good audio recording system.

The wireless mic need to have the ability to connect with our camera and be able to stay hidden - that's the only requirement.

All tips & hints are appreciated, thanks!

Re: Wireless lavalier microphone required - help

What kind of budget are you working with? If this is just for fun, pretty much any wireless camera mic would probably do the trick. You can find stuff for under a couple hundred bucks. The type of mic element you select will be determined by what you're trying to pick up. If you want to pick up everything around who is wearing it, make sure to get an omni mic. If you just want to hear the person wearing it, and cut out background noise, then a cardioid would be a better choice. However, realize that with a single lav mic, you're going to end up with that 'off mic' sound if the speakers end up too far from the mic.

My best suggestion to you is to avoid wireless on anything lower budget unless you already have access to it without having to deal with money. Otherwise, I highly suggest you just use a boom and/or a field recorder. Another possibility is to get a wired solution and hide the field recorder in a bag...? perhaps that the person is carrying? Maybe a backpack or perhaps some form of a satchel. All you have to do then is ensure that you sync them correctly- relatively easy with an improvised clapper board, or even a clap on camera. No matter what you do, though, I think you'll have to record it separately unless you want to invest more $$ than your experiment is likely worth at this point, monetarily speaking.

As for the mic selection, a possible solution could definitely be the Shure WL93. It's cheap, replaceable, small, and omnidirectional- a very big bonus in what I assume you will be doing, as you wouldn't want to have to point the mic at someone for it to work. It is also mountable on practically any clothing due to an interesting idea of sewing it on with the included accessories for doing so.

If you're around the DC area, I might be able to help you in person. I've been looking for an excuse to get a few 93s just in case anyway.

EDIT: You just had to ask, didn't you, Dick?

Well, a field recorder would also do the trick. The question is which one?

We would like to fit under 250 bucks (but it wouldn't really be a problem to pay more) - that would be ideal.

No, we're not filming for youporn but perhaps porntube, jk.

Oh, and we are resident in Sweden.

Actually, the field recorder idea is a great solution. Gives you more options than the wireless, and smaller potential gear requirements. An iPod can be configured to handle a mic input and the complete kit would fit well within your budget constraints, especially if you pick up a used one, including the mic needed. There are several mics that simply attach, or you can get an audio input device and use the mic of your choice. The nice advantage of using an iPod is that when you're done with your project, you've got an iPod. Dedicated equipment may not be as easy to re-deploy.

I know that you can get a Tascam DR-05 is somewhere around 100 dollars, and if you can find a small lavaliere or microphone such as the SM11 with an 1/8in-microphone adapter for the external input, you'd be able record even more flexibly. The iPod option works too, but then again, you can always use a field recorder for assorted things like ambient sound sampling, or it could be sold to someone else/lent to close friends and even used to snoop on people. (Though the lattermost is against the law.)

Rent your stuff at ljud & bildmedia in stockholm (Ljud & Bildmedia AB).

Lrtv also comes to mind as well. If you're not in stockholm then there should be some other places to rent from.

If you need multitracking then there is zoom r16 or r8 for a good sound and cheap price.

My fave in lavs for film is the dpa4060. It has never let me down.

For a fairly cheap $ you could buy the line6 g30 system.
