So in the end I was also wrong about the site being optimized for phones. It displays even worse on an iPhone.

Hmm. It looks fine to me on my iPhone.
I normally use tapatalk but took a look at the mobile version and it seems ok, other than a bug where the "choose action" button is available to be clicked but does nothing when you're not logged in....
What do you find objectionable about the mobile skin?
The main two things we're tackling for mobile are cosmetic issues with buttons and the front page 'above the fold' area.
Well I had been trying to stick with the much cleaner Tapatalk pro which they stopped supporting but this round of updates tanked that.

Jay, please post any Tapatalk feedback you have.
They've been very responsive to any issues we've brought up, and are lurking around here pretty regularly.
My big issue with Tapatalk now is that the thread preview always previews the first post in the thread, instead of the latest post.

The did end up backpedaling and returned a few major items that they removed... Like the home screen. Overall, the Tapatalk experience works quite well on other forums.
