re: X32 Discussion I have been trying to figure out if the X32 would work for my needs. I keep saying that I think it is a very good console and I should add for the price and what it gives you it is really nice. I have been telling other people how good this thing looks to be. And I was very impressed with the way the Mr. Behringer handled himself here and it looks like the company really wants to improve on how things were done in the past. I have been looking at it very carefully and trying to figure out if it is suitable for my needs, which if it were for the price is incredible. I would have been satisfied if at the very beginning someone at the top were to say – no this will not handle what you are trying to do. Mostly it seems like I am being told that I am not looking at it the right way. Not by Joe but by other posters. I started the X32 for theatrical thread in hopes of finding other people that were trying to do the same thing I am. And I get the feeling that maybe I am more unique then I think I am. I tried to be as polite as possible but it seems like I have a problem writing in a way that people can understand what I am trying to say. People are trying to help and I appreciate that. They have no way of knowing what my experience is. I am not new at this and I know what works for me. And from at least a few posts there are others that would like it to work the same way. I have been making my living at sound for a long time. I may not be in the big leagues by some people’s standards but I am not a weekend warrior either. I have morphed over the years starting out in broadcast sound (with some film work also) and slowly into the live sound end of things. So that now I am almost exclusively doing live sound. I usually do 4 theatrical shows a year and at the rate we are renting consoles for I was (dreaming) thinking that the X32 would work for me for those shows. I used an M7 again for the last show and I am not a fan. BTW if anyone has looked at the console file that is on the PC when you use Xcontrol it looks like this console can handle a lot more then 32 channels if they let it. And that is another thing, I can understand if they want to restrict it to only 32 channels. But to quote Uli from the Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A thread from page 3 post 54 “The new X32 Digital Mixer has already earned the praise of users and reviewers alike as it puts a $20,000 console in users’ hands for less than $3,000.” And Page 12 post 228 he said “Over the past years we have made huge investments in developing the technology platform which products such as X32, S16 and P16 are built on. This now allows us to scale in multiple directions.” And on page 14 post 277 in response to my post 276 where I said “So I am looking for something more like an X48.” He said - “I fully understand your requirements, however to be able to achieve very aggressive X32 pricing you need extremely high production numbers. As you move into higher channel counts, sales volume substantially decrease. With the X32 we have developed a very powerful and flexible technology platform which will allow us to easily scale downwards and hence we are now focusing on smaller format consoles which also represent the market sweetspot. If you need a mixer with high channel counts and also more complex features such as system redundancy, you might want to look at the Midas Pro1 or Pro2 which have become very popular and reasonably priced consoles.” And I want to thank him for being straightforward with his replies and comments. So based on those things and many other comments I don’t think I was out of line to HOPE that the X32 might be made to work the way that I think it should. I haven’t found a digital console yet that does everything I want. The new Digicos look like they might fit my needs but I keep hearing about them crashing. I was part of the production team for a show that we hired Eighth Day Sound to do the sound part. And we were supposed to get 2 Digico D5s from them and not too long before the show they told us the D5s were crashing and they substituted 2 PM1Ds instead. Another funny thing on that show, I had them hire Doug Fowler to take over FOH duties for me because I ended up having a conflict with the show dates. So when I hear of crashes it makes me very leery no matter how much the console costs. As far as my response in post 1870 to what Joe was quoting the developer as saying. - "What Kevin referred to is actually related to the Setup/Global setting "Scene Go Next", which automatically sets the selection to the next scene in line. While this is useful for just pressing GO repeatedly proceeding through the show, without having to press NEXT in between. But, it obviously also means that the selection is one ahead of what is currently active, and when you press Save, it would correctly be stored in the next scene. If the customer does not like it that way, they should just switch off the "Scene Go Next" function." I am fairly sure that this is how the iLive used to work. I think they changed it. I think it shows a different work flow mentality then someone that has theater in mind. I mean there is no way to insert a scene. You can skip a scene which is great, not many consoles allow you to leave a scene in there and flag it to be skipped. But there is no back button and no save button on the surface and you can’t assign a UDK to do those functions. That makes the work flow very awkward. With that evidence I say that they weren’t thinking of theater usage at all when this board was designed. And maybe the theater market is just too small for them to think about it. So maybe my wording (“Yet another digital console that is designed by people that have no concept of what is needed for musical theater.”) was a bit strong but I stand by the meaning of my post. So Bennett I am sorry if my expectations were too high. But keeping in mind the quote from Uli about giving people a $20,000 console for $3000. Am I asking too much of a $20,000 console?
